Welcome to the board. For one thing you can trust the great men and women on this forum. There are some extremely knowledgeable people here with no incentive to lead you astray.

Welcome to the hobby! I'm fairly new myself, discovering it in spring of 2008.
Remember the old adage: If it's too good to be true, it probably is!
Just by reading the forum you'll figure out what is good and what isn't...I have learned more from reading the various coin forums then anywhere else!

Welcome to the forum. I also am new to this forum, and have been collecting for only about 2 years. I have spent most of my time lurking in the backround and reading the posts, asking questions when I had one. The dividends were tremendous, I am extremely proud of my collection and had I stopped here sooner, the knowledgeable cast of characters here would have kept me from making the few newbie mistakes I made when I first started. Definately recommend you post a thread asking about which books to read prior to starting your collection, they will want to know what denominations you intend to collect and will lead you in the right direction. Knowledge is key in this hobby.

To expand upon Kie's excellent advice, I would suggest you get on down to your local book store and get yourself a Red Book. Look in the Collectibles section. you will find there are many numismatic publications, and there are many, many titles the mainstream bookstores don't carry...but when I was new I was told to buy a Red Book....and I did. I learned a ton from it, and have used the information contained in it as a "springboard", so to speak, to higher learning about coins...and at the very least, I understood more of what people were talking about on the forums.
While you are at the book store, go to the magazine section and get a copy of each coin magazine they have, then read them cover to cover. You may find you really enjoy reading them, or you may not. But there's only one way to find out! That's what I did, also last year. Since then I have subscribed to one, get two more semi-regularly, and one of them I only got one copy of, (that one) didn't care for it, and have only purchased once since, when the cover article intrigued me. I didn't care for that issue, either, so I probably won't ever get any more.
As you learn more, and if you should find one series that you particularly like, you will find that there is probably a book and maybe even a club, just specifically for that one design! I personally have chosen NOT to limit myself by "focusing" on one thing, but I am the exception, not the norm.
Sorry my first post was so short...

Welcome, just arm yourself with books and subscribe to one of the magazines, Coin World, Numismatic News - study for awhile and don't buy from those "to good to be true" type people. Find a club of visit some local showsand shops and wait until you feel confortable before buying anything.
You'll do find all you got to do is jump in with both feet and have fun!!!

If owning those coins was such a great investment, they wouldn't be for sale.
earn first, then spend.
