Hello from Coinman1981

Hi, everyone. I have been pursuing this site for a long time as a guest and finally decided to join. I don't know why I waited this long -- what a wonderful forum.

I started actively collecting coins in 1992 when I was 11 years old and have not stopped since. I have done many "smaller" coin projects over the years; normally I put some kind of themed set together and then sell them after I move on to other interests; but my "Big 3" mainstays since Day One has been 20th century U.S. coinage, Lincoln cents, and Canadian coins. My "long-term" projects include a complete XF+ 20th century type set (no gold, but it is a beautiful set in a white Capital holder) and, now, I'm working on building a complete Lincoln cent collection.

My Canadian coin collecting has been far less structured. While I have no physical connection with Canada whatsoever, I have always loved the beautiful coinage from the nation and, every now and then, enjoy adding a Canadian coin or P/L set to my holdings.

I look forward to contributing some of my thoughts, insight, and opinions here and, as all good numismatists do, learning a thing or two from others as well.

Welcome to Coin Talk. I hope you don't end up regretting some day the sets you made. I've read where others did that when they were younger, and now wish they hadn't. But anyway, welcome to the forum, and you have fun here.

Thanks for the insight. Amazingly, while I have been at this enthusiastically for almost 20 years and through various "stages" in the hobby, I keep going back to certain types of coins. I am thinking about diving into 19th-century type someday; not sure what. Maybe Seated coinage, but that's still up in the air.

In 2010 my plan is to do an eight coin variety set of Seated Liberty Quarters. I'm very much looking forward to it.

Good luck on that! Are you aiming to include all the mintmarks from the series, too?

Welcome to CoinTalk Coinmay1982, sounds like you have a direction laid out. I too use the Capital Holders for 20 century type, 10th century as well. Glad you have joined us.

Welcome coinman I was collecting a little bit of everything asc, morgans, nickels, pennies. until I took some advise that i got here and decided to focus on one thing. That was a fifty year collection of proof sets from 1959 - 2009. I completed that and then went on to work on the fifty years of mint sets as well.
I definately think having a plan is the way to go. good luck on your collection!!!!

Wow--what a beautiful collection that must be. Did you include the premier and prestige sets from the 80s and 90s, too, or sticking to a one-a-year approach during that period? The mint set collection will be a nice challenge, that's for sure! I know those earlier sets can be difficult to find in good shape. Good luck on that! Sounds like a great plan.

I just reread as I was going through the thread. I meant to say regret some day selling the sets you made. My bad.

Mr. Coin Lover,

No problem -- actually, there are a few coins I regret selling over the years:

1875-S 20 cent in VG; I bought it for around $40 in 1995; sold it for about the same 3 years later; $150+ today according to PCGS.... :-(

1877 CC Seated Quarter in VG; worth $12 when I got it in 1994, sold for around $15 a few years later, now worth $45-50 :-(

I bought a few 2-cent and 3-cent pieces back in the mid-90s when you could get them for like $5-7 a piece in G-VG and sold them around 1998 for about the same. Now they are $20+ in the same grades. :-(

So true, when we're young we do often lack foresight -- and investment judgement!

I mentioned earlier in this thread I'm starting a Lincoln cent collection; well, I learned my lesson.... I've already scraped together the money and have already bought the 14-D, 24-D, and 70-S small date, because I know those aren't going to be going DOWN in value anytime soon....I think ;-)
