My Mood: | Buying fake coins?
How many have you bought? Have you ever heard of a reputable person buying fakes? As I cruise ebay and thru this forum I have become more aware of how saturated the coin market truly is.
I bought a fake coin awhile back and I found out that there are a lot more fake coins than I had previously thought existed. Since my fake discovery there is at least one more in my small collection that I am taking a closer look at. I learn just like others to stay away from certain coins and scrutinize all coins whenever you buy.
With that said, with a reputable dealer you should be in safe hands. http://www.cointalk.com/t69543/ http://coins.about.com/od/goldrareco...coin_fraud.htm |

In my entire life, I bought one. That was too many.
But in all honesty pretty much everybody buys a fake at some point. Even the knowledgeable folks. And dealers, even good ones, buy them from time to time. And dealers, even good ones, sell them from time to time.
But the difference with the good ones is that if they sell you a fake, and you find out it's a fake - they'll give you your money back.
Nobody knows everything there is to know about all coins - it can't be done. There's too much to know and a lifetime is not long enough. Thus people make mistakes.
Object is, try to make as few of them as possible.

I've never unknowingly purchased a fake. But I've got plenty of time to. |

| Hello Fretboard, I may have purchased a fake as recently as this weekend. I just posted some photos on the World & Ancient Forum. This one coin is not listed in my KM catalog & may just be a fantasy piece. It should be a 1929 20 cent from Taiwan ROC. However, the R.O.C. 20 cent listings seem to end at 1928. The thread is titled: Recognize this R.O.C. coin? - Got another small batch. Here is a photo of the one coin I can’t find in the catalog. It is either very rare or very fake . Very best regards, collect89

Over the years I have purchased quite a few counterfeits. Always with my eyes open and knowing what I was buying. Usually they are contemporary counterfeits.

It ends up that the China coin I bought this weekend is genuine. I was looking at the wrong country. It is a coin from Guangdong in mainland China (Kwangtung in the KM catalog). The number in the KM catalog is Y426. The value in UNC is $5. The subject on the reverse is a bust of Sun Yat-sen. I would call this the obverse. Mr. Sun Yat-sen is a leader that is favored by both the mainland PRC and the island ROC. If you want to learn more about Sun then you can visit Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Yat-sen Very best regards, Collect89

I've been toying with the idea of purchasing some fake 2 cent pieces. Primarely to study and compare to genuine pieces as a learning opportunity. I think it would make a good resources piece for CT someday.
Anyone own any of the fake 2 cent pieces out there? I'd be interested in your thoughts on this idea.

Most of my collection is from the U. S. Mint & unless they are minting fakes I should be OK , my older coins come from private auctions , usually older estates ect. : )

I'm ashamed to say three (3) that I know of...I returned a pretty good fake 1825 half cent, a bogus 1797 Large Cent was reimbursed by PayPal, and the third was one I bought when I first joined eBay...an 1843 silver dollar. I thought I got a really good deal...EF for $89, but I could tell it was a fake right away...very light. I still have it...I'll post pictures once I get a camera.
That's why I always keep reminding myself..."never buy anything you don't understand".
Since following some of the recent CT lessons on fake coins, I've limited my purchases to FS coins direct from the US Mint.
