i was looking through my moms coin collection with her and found somehting strange, a steel penny with the date 1958
it looks just like her other steel pennys, it feels like it weighs the same
what do you think its worth? im guessing its grade is XF-40 or AU-50

I never have heard of a real steel cent in other dates than 1943 and 1944.

I really can't say anything else without seeing a photo.

ummm.... i can try
first i have to find the digital camera so it might take awhile



never mind.... i looked closer at it with a magnifying glass and noticed that the rim looked like a normal penny and discovered that someone had put some coating over it to make it look like a steel penny

Sorry about that...a lot of people do that to cents...they coat them in silver/gold/ etc...

1984, the mint was experimenting with other compositions and struck a bunch of copper clad steel cents. When they finished their experiments they took them to a foundry for destruction but one of the bags of cents broke open. A worker at the foundry picked up several of them and kept them. Later (around 1994) he sent a few of the to Coin World for examination. So they do exist.

Get a magnet! If you do happen to find such an anomaly, PCGS has stated publicly in print that it wants the coin sent to them via registered mail. My guess is it would be quite valuable, assuming it was struck at a US Mint. Do not release such a specimen to anyone other than PCGS or NGC for that reason.

By the way, I heard on the radio last week that Congress has authorized the production of all-steel cents as well as nickels for 2009, to save production costs. As we all know,for years now, it has cost far more than $.01 and $.05 respectively to produce the penny and nickel.
