New on board with a Judd-1617 1879 dollar

I just signed up today. I have been collecting coins about 6 years, mostly PCGS and NGC Seated and better Morgan dollars, but occasionally I've branched out. I joined this site today primarily because I'm interested in buying an 1879 Goloid dollar, Judd-1617, PCGS PR53, and so far haven't found anything to guide me as to the price I should pay for it. I usually resort to Heritage archives for such a question, but I found no coin in that grade in its archives. PCGS' site also doesn't help; it confirms that it graded the coin, but provides nothing re its value (unlike what it does with Morgan/Seated/Peace dollars, etc.). Any assistance would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!
Impaired Proofs are usually sold at a big discount, but for a trial type, with so few coins available, to such a collector, the discount should be less than usual.

If one sold by Heritage in PR61 for over 90,000, then an AU53 would be higher in my opinion than the PCGS AU53 selling on the Cleveland Craiglist for $2200. Just my opinion. Craigslist has less protection than eBay. I would guess high 4 figures, low 5.

I love those pattern dollars! I checked the closest I could find sold on 7/3/09 in PF55 for $1474 1879 PATTERN ONE METRIC DOLLAR JUDD-1617, PR55
So I would think right around that price sounds right.

I would contact Legend, they may be able to help narrow down a price as they deal a lot in patterns.

Thanks, all. The coin sold for more than I was willing to pay (my high bid was $1125); I am new to patterns, and felt I was a bit too much in the dark to venture higher.

Smart move.

These coins are R.4, so it's not a "once in lifetime" thing. "When in doubt, leave it out".

Stack's sold a PR40 in July 2008 for $1840.

More importantly... WELCOME ! Hope you enjoy the board.
