| Why can't we edit old posts?
I am used to a different forum but it seems it would be useful to be able to edit old posts.
For example I had a thread about half eagle varieties and I wanted to add some information to the first post so folks would not have to weed through the whole thread to piece things together.
Thanks ahead of time for any info on this.

OK - it's been explained many times, but you are fairly new so ........
It works like this, every day the mods read every post on the forum to make sure the rules are being followed. But once read, we don'ty have time to go back through all of them and read them all again day after day.
Well, the SPAMMERS figured out that if they waited one day, the following day they could go back, edit their posts and add SPAM links or malicious links all over the place. So the forum format was changed so that nobody but a mod can edit a post once it is 24 hrs old.
In other words - it is done to protect you the members of the forum.

Interesting, I understand but one more question
How often would this spamming happen vs. a real useful need to edit old posts? I don't recall seeing this happen much on other forums that allow this.
Thanks
Ben

I can understand the need to control SPAM. It would be helpful in the giveaway forum to be able to at least edit the thread titles so the folks can at least notify everyone when the giveaway is over... seems like folks keep entering giveaway that have ended days ago |

It's really a limitation of the software. The way it's setup, it's either all or nothing. I do hate putting restrictions like this on members, but I would hate it even more if spammers were surreptitiously placing porn and whatever other nasty things on CoinTalk.

Let me know if I am opening old wounds but I would like to suggest that we be able to earn the ability to edit old posts.
i.e. to avoid spam put new members on a 1 or 3 month probation to weed out the spammers and then activate the ability.

If the software would allow it, I would have done it already. Unfortunately, with this setting, it's all or nothing. It doesn't let me differentiate between classes of members, it's just one line in the code that I can set how long until posts are locked from editing. I have requested the software developers to enhance this option along the lines you suggest, but have no idea whether they will.

Fair enough. Given the details I am good now.
I'd be curious what a followup with the developers reveals.
Thanks

Let's just say that there could be some improvement on the communication from the developers. I do know that they are working on a major upgrade for the software though, no idea whether this will be included.

What's the name of the group who produces the code used on this forum?

Thanks, I am checking out thier site now. Let me know if I am crossing any lines, I am just curious by nature.
My quick read through the manual looks like you shoud be able to create a seperate user group with edit permissions and use reputation threshold and or number of days registered as a trigger to promote someone from the initial new member group to the new group with the edit permissions.
I could not quite tell where the section on limiting the edit permisions was, whether it is in the seperate groups or site wide but all the above assumes it is in the groups since moderators can edit and are considered a seperate group.

Anyone who isn't happy with the way he has set up CoinTalk, could join dozens and dozens of other forums; or assume the burden of labor, time and money involved, and set up their own version of a "perfect" forum.
Suggestions are fine, but once Peter makes the effort to explain why he doesn't accept one, carping about it, and telling him why his decision is wrong, is ungratefulness to the nth degree.

I know there are other forums but I like this one and am just asking questions. Sorry if I have placed any burdens on you or Peter.

The settings are really complex, yes each usergroup does have a setting to allow them to or to not allow them to edit posts. However, the setting for when to lock posts from editing is in a different place and it's global.
