inherited coin collection

I have recently inherited coins from my grandfather. Many are in bags, etc., but I have a 'book' of one cent coins (1909-1988) that appear to be deteriorating due to the type of plastic in which they are being stored. I would appreciate any suggestions for cleaning and value. I live on the Alabama gulf coast and have not been successful in finding anyone who can help. Forgive the questions, but I am clueless! Thanks!
