Looking for help in Jacksonville/OP, Florida

Good afternoon,

Mine is probably an unusual post. I am coming to the experts for help. Year’s ago my grandparents were coin collectors. Their collection passed to my father, who never did anything to it other than store it in an old suitcase. The coins now belong to me. I have had them for many years not really knowing what to do with them. I am not a collector but I wish to put them into the hands of those that can really admire and appreciate them. My dilemma is that I do not wish to ship them to a large company and take what they are willing to give me for them so that they can turn around and sell them for a larger profit. I would like to sell them. I am thinking that the best way to go about this is to offer them individually but I am not certain. So, I ask for your advice as the coin experts that you are the following:
  • Do any of you live/work in the Jacksonville, Orange Park Florida area?
  • Do you have any recommendation for me to sell the coins and/or bills but not to be taken advantage of?

Thank you very much for your time.

Lisa, once you have 10 posts under your belt you could sell some of your Dads items in the open section. In the mean time why not just hang with us here and maybe, who knows? We might just turn you into a collector. Welcome to the forum.....

Welcome to CoinTalk Lisa,

A good first step might be to start to inventory what you have. An inexpensive book to assist you would be A Guide Book of United States Coins by RS Yeoman. The 2010 edition is out and you should be able to get a copy for $15 or so. Available on the internet, bookstores, etc. Do keep in mind that the prices noted are somewhat out of date by the time the book gets published.

Using the book you can start a list of what you have. On paper or a text file is good enough. If you have a digital camera the members here can help you by looking at pictures.

With a complete list and the advice from your new friends here at CoinTalk you can get an idea of each item's value.

Hi Lisa,

Advice will depend on how much time you are willing to invest to understand value. If you are looking for quick and easy you may want to visit a number of local dealers to try to get a feel for value. If you want to get the best deal possible you may want to take an inventory of what you have and share some of the list with the group. Pictures that represent condition helps and is almost required to get good advice. Hope it works out for you. Please do not hesitate to ask questions if you want to spend the time. The group will give you great advice if you take the time.

Out of curiosity - what kind of notes are you talking about? Those are probably the easiest to describe and give rough value on.

Best Regards ~ Darryl

selling is tough. Dealers aren't going to pay what the coin is worth because they need to sell it and make a profit. E bay and pay pal will get their cut also. Auction houses will get their cut also. You might be able to find a dealer to sell the coins for you for 10%, which is reasonable. I can recommend a few but none in FL.

Much depends on the type, mintmarks and condition of the coins you have. If some of them are RAW and valuable consider getting them Graded by A TPG.

Whatever you do, Dont clean the coins!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks green patriots are a dying breed today. Back to coins and selling a collection, Some go by the 20/50/30 rule. Twenty percent will sell right away, fifty percent will take a little longer to sell and 30 percent will be difficult to sell.
