That's one of the things the CHAT is for Spider - you can go in there and talk about anything. You can even create Private chat rooms so only those you invite can join you.

I understand what ya mean. But you still can talk about anything you want with others whether they are on-line or not. Just use the PM function - or send them an email. And when you ARE on-line together - use the CHAT.

To be quite honest this subject comes up every few months - it has been discussed many times. But the purpose of this forum is to create a place where people can talk about a shared common interest - coins and other numimsatically related items. That's it. That's why we're all here.

There are many other forums out there designed just for the purpose of discussing anything you want. And if that's what you want to do - there is nothing wrong with that. But that is not what this forum is for.

Let me give you another reason. It used to be that every few months somebody would ask why can't we have a CHAT here ? The answer was always the same - we don't have one because people just don't use them. But 3 or 4 or a half dozen members would say - but we will, we will - if only we had one.

Well now we have one, and in your own words - "yes but no 1 is ever in them, ...."

That kinda says it all doesn't it ?

ok a couple of things GD
its carzy to think of some 1 pming or emailing every 1 on the forums to ask them a questions? and CHAT and a forum r very different, btw i use CHAT and so does Penny case and others too, but i do believe an "other" forum would greatly improve this forum not cram it up with junk or something, i do believe it would be a huge improvement

One thing is that "other" fourms often get way off topic and people get mad because others do not agree.

You said--- "but i do believe an "other" forum would greatly improve this forum not cram it up with junk or something," that is what would happen to the "other" forum...it would be filled with "junk" and who wants to read "junk"--

Think about this...what happens at your house when "junk" mail comes in the mail--nobody reads it...nobody learns from it...that is what I think would happen.

A couple of points about the off-topic chat. I get more complaints when there is an off-topic thread in the forums than I get complaints asking for off-topic. I set up the live chat to try to please everyone, realizing that there's no way I can ever really please everyone. Yes, in order for the live chat to work, you need more than one person in there. You might try posting a specific time that you invite everyone to join you in chat. You can also send a PM to specific people you'd like to invite into chat with you, but you can't send a PM to all members (the software won't let you, and most people would consider that spam). I put the chat up there so people would use it, so I'm pleased to see you're interested.

Lots of "someones" have already done that.
  • There is a newsgroup nominally devoted to coins, in which a large percentage of the postings are either flaming other posters, or off-the-wall political and religious stuff.
  • One of the other most popular collector-oriented forums includes an "Open" section, but if your skin is thinner than that of a cross between a hippo and a rhino, stay away!
  • Just pick a subject, and search for that subject plus the word "forum" on Google and you'll find a bunch of established places.

Personally, after retiring from a professional life in which I spent a significant part of most working days arguing with others - in and out of court - I like the peace and quiet of a Coin Talk-type haven from the baser side of people. But if you want to engage in or or even , then be my guest. Just please do it somewhere that I don't have to witness or be involved with.

I have an extensive collection of websites with .gif and .jpg smileys and cartoons. Right click on any of them in one of my postings, then click on "properties", and you'll have the URL for that particular one. Have fun.
