TRIVIA: Winged Victory Coins:

Are you familiar with the Mexican coin, Libertad?

Yes, you're right, it's a Mexican silver bullion coin. Yes, its composition is one ounce (un onza pura plata) silver. Yes, it was first minted in 1982. Yes, it features a "Winged Victory" on its reverse.

Here's a photo courtesy of Don's World Coin Gallery:

Here's another Mexican coin that's been featuring "Winged Victory" long before the Libertads were minted (photo courtesy of coinarchives):

Mexico has added the 50 Peso Platinum coin to its arsenal of bullion coins featuring "Winged Victory." (photo courtesy coinarchives.com).

And how can we forget the 1921 Mexican Silver 2 Peso? (coinarchives.com photo):

Guess what USA Silver Coin features a "Winged Victory" on its reverse?

HINT 1: Philadelphia was the only mint to strike this coin in 1934.

HINT 2: Philly, Denver and Frisco minted this coin in '35, '36, '37 and '38.

HINT 3: The reverse, also, features two great American heroes (Stephen Austin and Sam Houston).

If you guessed the coin is the Texas Independence Centennial Silver Half Dollar, you are right!

Here's a photo courtesy of coinpage.com:

Did you guess right? Do you have one?

Would you like to see other world coins featuring "Winged Victory" on them?

Here's a photo of a 1930 Polish 5 Zlotych coin courtesy of coinarchives.com:

Here's two photos of two different dated Italian 100 Lira coins courtesy of coinarchives:

1930:

1936:

The next photo takes us back to Britain's Anglo-Saxon period (600-775) The coin is silver and photo is courtesy of coinarchives.com:

http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotvie...ucID=80&Lot=81

And now let's go even further beck in time to the Huviska Dynasty of India (158-195) to view a photo of a gold Dinar (coinarchives.com):

I believe Roman history shows the first coin to bear "Winged Victory" on it is this 106 B.C. silver Denarius. Note: early Roman coins always had "Winged Victory" driving a biga (4 horse drawn chariot). Photo courtesy of coinarchives.com:

Thought you'd enjoy the tour, did you?

Slightly OT, but my wife and I agree that our first look at the actual Winged Victory of Samothrace in the Louvre was the absolute highlight of our Paris visit. We still talk about it 25+ years later. I've never seen a picture that does justice to the beauty of the real thing.

Don't have any coins with Winged Victory on them, but I do have a set of 5 and 10 peso coins from Chile, featuring a representation of Liberty with wings.

Not really that far from the Mexican pieces. After all, the Winged Victory - the original is on top of a monument on Reforma in downtown Mexico - represents both victory (the wreath) and liberty (the broken chain).

And yes, the Stalingrad Winged Victory is indeed depicted on a Russian coin. In the background though:

Nice, I'll have to try and find one of these.

And she really isn't winged. It's more like her cloak that's fluttering behind her...
but hey, close enough I guess
