| 2010 Winter Olympic Games Sport event: GAMES OF THE 21st WINTER OLYMPIAD. VANCOUVER 2010 Coin name: 2008 $250 Silver Coin. Towards Confederation State: Canada Law: N/A Date of issue: 20 March 2008 Denomination: 250 dollars Metal, fineness: Silver 9.999/10.000 Total weight (gr): 1.000 Fine metal content not less than (gr): 1.000,00 Diameter (mm): 101,60 Thickness (mm): N/D Edge: Plain Quality: Proof Mintage (pcs): 2.500 Mint: Royal Canadian Mint - Monnaie royale canadienne Picture: http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/7...erationzb1.jpg http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/8343/towcon.jpg (from the RCM site) Reverse: The design flows from east to west beginning in 1534 symbolized by a portrait of Jacques Cartier and the cross claiming the land for France. Just below the portrait is an astrolabe representing Samuel de Champlain and his explorations. A rendition of the tall ship represents the British influence and the underlying French-English current that continues to this day. This leads the eye to the centre of the design which features Lower Fort Garry and the Red River Cart which was a means of transportation over land and on water. We see the Métis flag featuring the infinity symbol representing the coming together of the two distinct cultures: European and the indigenous North American. To the lower left to the design are the Voyageurs travelling by canoe over the rapids which represents the development of the fur trade in Canada. Another major Canadian industry is represented by the salmon swimming upstream. Above the Voyageur are images of David Thompson and Alexander Mackenzie representing the exploration and mapping of Canada to the Pacific Coast. Beside Mackenzie is an image of Fort Langley representing the West coast and trading posts. Above Mackenzie is a logging theme representing a significant industry of the time which utilize the river system for transportation. The design comes full circle with the image Province House in Prince Edward Island in 1867 where the Fathers of Confederation met. The inscription "CANADA" on bottom. Reverse author: Susan Taylor (Canada) Obverse: In the centre: on the right the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with the initials "SB" on the bottom left-hand corner of the neckline, on the left the official Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games emblem. The inscriptions "250 DOLLARS", "ELIZABETH II" and "2008" along the circumference of the coin, divided by dots, to the top left, right and bottom, respectively. Obverse author: Susanna Blunt (Canada) CoA: 1.134/2.500 The coin comes in a presentation case. |

| 2010 Winter Paralympic Games Sport event: 21st OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES AND 10th PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES. VANCOUVER 2010 Coin name: 2009 $250 Silver Coin. Surviving the Flood State: Canada Law: N/A Date of issue: 21 November 2008 Denomination: 250 dollars Metal, fineness: Silver 9.999/10.000 Total weight (gr): 1.000 Fine metal content not less than (gr): 1.000,00 Diameter (mm): 101,60 Thickness (mm): N/D Edge: Plain Quality: Proof Mintage (pcs): 1.500 Mint: Royal Canadian Mint - Monnaie royale canadienne Picture: http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/3957/surflo.jpg (from the RCM site) Reverse: In ancient times, a great flood happened that threatened the survival of the Squamish people. The people banded together in canoes (joined together, barge-like), and tied them canoes to En cheki (now called Mount Garibaldi) so they wouldn't drift away. An eagle caught salmon and dropped the fish into the canoes, giving the Squamish people sustenance and ensuring their survival. This story depicts the power of many working together. It also illustrates the power, connection and interdependence between man and nature. Reverse author: Xwa Lack tun [Rick Harry] (Canada) Obverse: In the centre: on the right the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with the initials "SB" on the bottom left-hand corner of the neckline, on the left the official Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games emblem. Obverse author: Susanna Blunt (Canada) CoA: 0331/1.500 The coin comes in a presentation case. Among the 1 kg silver coins issued for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, it's the only one whose package shows also the Paralympic symbol. The number of mintage pieces is also different from the other coins of the series commemorating the two sport events (Olympics and Paralympics). |

Water, in all its forms, is everywhere. It nourishes, cleanses, and gives beauty to the province's ever changing Sea-to-Sky region - and to all of canada. Across the country, towns and cities reflect the same energy as their natural environments and cultures from around the world come together in a fusion of fresh ideas and possibilities. The reverse attempts to illustrate the diverse attributes of the area that will play host to the Olympics. It features both nature and technology, with nature being represented with aspects of water like rain. Nature is also portrayed with trees and landscape of the country. Technology is portrayed with images of train tracks, a bridge, a cityscape and power lines. | Increasing interest
The number of 1 kg coins minted in the years has grown considerably.
It seems that what at first was considered a "freakish" product, mainly designed for bullion investors, now is growing bigger and bigger interest among coin collectors.
Here is a recap of the 1 kg silver coins commemorating sport events by year of issue (as far as I know): Year - # of coins - States
2000 - 1 - Australia
2001 - 0
2002 - 1 - Russia
2003 - 0
2004 - 1 - Belarus
2005 - 2 - China, Australia
2006 - 3 - Liberia, Qatar, Belarus
2007 - 3 - Canada, China, France
2008 - 3 - China, Canada, Canada
2009 - 1 - Canada
Other countries are joining: there are news of the future issue of one 1 kg silver coin for the 2012 London Olympics by the Royal Mint.

A lot of work has gone into identifying that list of yours--there are some fairly obscure coins you've found there--and more has gone into finding suppliers. I cannot add any other coins to your list: all I can do is applaud your achievement.
Near misses for your list are the three one-kilo silver US commemoratives for the 2008 Olympic Games (featuring the Great Wall, a Dragon, and Panda Sam). But these were issued by the US Olympic Committee, not the US Mint, so they are medals rather than coins ... and anyway, I'm sure you already know about them.
Slightly further off the wall is the 2001 Cook Islands Moby Dick commemorative. That's a genuine silver coin, but it weighs two kilos rather than one, and you'd have to accept whale fishing as a sport!
Later,
John

Later,
John | Yep, I have seen them, and also a similar plate/medal commemorating the equestrian Olimpics held in Hong Kong, issued by the Chinese Olympic commitee. My income does not allow to buy everything, and then I have fixed the "border" of collecting only Legal Tender.
By the way: I have just discovered that Liberia has issued in 2008 a 1 kg silver coin commemorating the 2008 European football (soccer) championship. I am trying to buy also this one, and I hope to post soon another schede. |
