| 1970's 1 oz silver art bar collector
Hello,
I am new to this forum. I found this forum in a google search and I lurked around this forum for a short while. This forum looks like I might fit in as a collector.
I like to collect 1970's 1-oz silver art bars. I like the artwork on most of these '70's silver bars. Some of the favorite 1970's silver art bars include bars that were minted by Mother Lode Mint, Hamilton Mint, USSC, and Madison Mint. So far, I was able to buy most of my '70's 1-oz silver art bars at coins shows and at my local coin dealer. I bought some '70's art bars on ebay but only because I got them a low premium over spot silver. I prefer to buy locally at a coin dealer or at a coin show. I usually avoid ebay because I like the challange of finding them locally and when I find them locally, I can usually pay between $1.50 to $2 over spot silver. Based on my experience, I can buy (If I can find them) these '70's bars for a much lower price locally through my dealer and at coin shows than I could get them on ebay. With all of that said, I was able to buy a 1-oz 1974 Hamilton silver bar on ebay for what I think was an excellent price. My last silver ebay purchase was that 1974 Hamilton Mint 1-oz silver art bar and that the price I paid when I won the ebay auction was about $2 over spot silver price. My last local purchase of a 1970's silver art bar was last week when I bought a Madison Mint and paid just over $1.50 over spot silver price.
I love collecting these '70's bars and I feel that I am on a scavenger hunt when I go to a coin show in my area to search for these art bars. That is fun to me. I have a feeling that I will like this forum and hopefully I can pick up a lot of knowledge here as well as to share any knowledge that I might have.
Thanks for allowing me to become a member here on this forum.

I plan to post a picture of one of the silver art bars that I collect. It might be later today after I get home from work. I do not have a digital camera yet but I have a scanner to scan the bar. I plan to come back on this forum later today to post some pics of some examples of the 1970's art bars that I collect.

Sorry for taking so long to post some pictures of my 1970's 1-oz silver art bars. I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, an expert photographer. I do not have a digital camera but I took these pictures by using my HP scanner. The quality is not the best IMO. I will get better eventually. Here are some pics of a few of the 1970's 1-oz silver art bars that I collect:
I might have "crop" this pic a little too close. This 1-oz silver art bar was minted by the E.J. Aleo & CO mint. This is part of a series of Watergate theme art bars minted by E.J. Aleo & CO mint . I believe the other 2 art bars in this series are "Speak No Evil" and "Hear No Evil". I bought this art bar at coin show that was in my area in April 2009. I paid $16.00 for it which IMO was a bit pricey considering that spot at that time was $11.89/oz but I like this art bar and that is what matters to me.
Here is another pic:
This 1-oz silver art bar shows a 1903 Cadillac. This silver art bar was minted by the Madison Mint in 1972. The second picture is a blank reverse of this Madison Mint silver art bar. I bought this 1-oz silver art bar at a local coin show in March 2009 for $15.00 which IMO was a good price considering that spot price at that time was $13.33/oz.
Here is my third pic of another 1970's 1-oz silver art bar:
This is a 1-oz silver "Peace" art bar that was minted by Yonkers (YCE) in 1970. The "hole" in the upper left hand side of the silver bar was already present when I bought this art bar. The reverse side of this 1-oz silver art bar is blank. I bought this 1-oz 1970 silver art bar at a local coin show in April 2009 for $13.25 when spot silver was $11.89/oz. This was an excellent price IMO.

Here is a 4th pic of another one of many silver art bars that I have:
This is a 1-oz "Easter 1974" silver art bar that was minted by the Madison Mint. Just as a side note but I am an agnostic. I bought this silver bar because I like the art work that was put in to making this 1-oz silver art bar. I bought this silver art bar at my local coin dealer earlier this month and I paid $15.50 when spot silver was $13.95/oz.
Here is my 5th pic:
This is a 1-oz "Yankee Doodle Spirit of '76" silver art bar that was minted by United States Coinage Corp (USC) in 1973. I bought this silver art bar from my local coin dealer in late April 2009. I paid spot silver price for this 1-oz silver art bar. Spot silver on the day that I bought this bar was $12.80. This was a great deal at $12.80 for this silver bar because I did not pay a premium. That always feels good to pay just spot for a 1-oz silver bar. There is some slight toning on this bar.
These 2 pics plus my other pics on my earlier post are just a few examples of what I like to collect. I have many more than what I showed on this forum. It would take me forever to post them all. Since I plan to buy more 1970's 1-oz silver art bars in the future, I will plan to post a few more pics of some of my future art bar purchases.

Lovely bars! I especially like the Watergate issue. And I agree, even though I too am agnostic, the Easter design is beautiful, I would buy it too.

There are some on ebay but I do not want to pay $25-$40 for a USSC silver art bar on ebay. I have been having some good luck in finding '70's art bars from various mints at coins shows and my local dealer will sometimes have some '70's silver art bars and I pay a much lower premium when I buy these art bars locally. I like the Watergate silver bars too. The Colonial Mint also made some 1970's silver art bars that had the Watergate theme.

Very interesting hobby...thanks for sharing. I always thought that the worlds mints primarily produce the silver bars/wafers.
Interesting to know that outside companies can have them produced as well. Are they poured or are the images primarily stamped/embossed on them
Thanks for the clarification

Thanks for the clarification | The interesting part about the 1970's silver art bars is that most of these art bars had low mintages to start out with. Based on what I learned, once silver hit $50/oz in 1980, a lot of these 1970's silver art bars were melted down. At this point, IMO it is hard to know how many of these 1970's 1-oz silver art bars are in existence today. It is fun to collect these '70 art bars because some of these art bars are older than me. It is fun to go to local coin shows and find certain silver art bars that were minted in the decade of the '70's.
I think the images are stamped on them. I think that there was a die stamp that was used that had the shape of whatever image they wanted to put on the silver bar and it might have been pressed in to the silver bar using that die stamp. I could be wrong on this. I might need to do a little research on this.

Welcome to CT - I like them all! Great and not so main stream approach to collecting! I cannot imagine these companies last long making these items so I would think they are few and far between. Just a guess and one I would not be surprised to hear is wrong. Looks like fun - Good luck!

Darryl | So far since August 2008, I have been able find some '70 arts bars at each major local coin show that I go to. That is the fun part IMO of going to a coin show. I never know what '70 silver art bars I will find until I actually get there and see them. I feel like a kid in a candy shop when I go to these local coin shows. It's fun. |
