New here, and found what I had thought was lost!

Hello everyone,

New to these forums, and just wanted to say hi. I recentlly found a large amount of coins that my late Grandfather willed to me that I had originally thought were lost. I found them stored in a box in the back of a storage closet in my mothers home. There ended up being a lot more their than I remembered. My grandfather got me interested in coins at a young age, and it brought back a lot of good memories finding this lost treasure.

Anyway there are hundreds of wheat penny's ranging from 1909 all the way up. Liberty Heads, and Buffalo Nickels dating back to the mid 1800's.

Over the next few weeks I will be posting some pictures so I can get an idea of what others might think these are worth. I did buy a Black book price guide and have an idea but would like to some other opinions. I'm not sure if I will be selling any of these. But wanted to know if in the event I do want to sell a few or all of them. Is it better to do it yourself over Ebay or a forums site such as this. Or is going to an auction house a good idea?

That's really great that you are able to continue the relationship after he is gone. In response to your post I would say that you can always search items on ebay to get maybe a ballpark figure of what you have. Just keep in mind that the sellers will usually tack on a premium. Your best bet is to buy whats referred to by collectors as "The Red Book". It quotes fair market prices for each degree of condition. As far as going to an auction house I would get a few different opinions on the value of the collection first.

The Red book is not a rational price guide. The values are from 20-40% more on most coins. However I still recommend it because it has a lot of useful information.

Hello All,

My dad left me a small collection which included a 1999 silver proof set and 5 morgans. I fell for the morgans. I've bought a few coins from ebay and the mint. Ran across your forum and a looking forward to learning a great deal.

Welcome aboard. Personally I don't sell coins so I do not know the best venue for selling your coins. Redbook is inflated so don't go by their prices. Try keeping your coins I think you will find them more then interesting.

Welcome jtrader. Good advice above on the Red Book. Keep in mind the prices in it are not gospel. If you are selling you can expect something less. Also keep in mind that someday someone else in your family might be interested in the family coins.
