I got my first half cent trading away 150 of my common forgein coin collection. oops...

I am now trying to grade it and was wondering if the way I am interpreting the scrols are correct.

As per the book VG 8 is Liberty entirely visible on hair band and lower curls worn. I think Liberty is almost visible. What do you think?

I think it could go into the F-15 zone, possible VF-20!

I think it may be vf, or close to it (star centrils mostly visible). Looks nice and original!

This is a tough grade, and I've been studying this coin in the ANA guide over the last few days. My best guess is that this coin is a VF-30. It is certainly better than a VF-20. I could use a better picture.. In vF-30 the Obverse hair ribbon is distinct and hair is worn from the back of the head to the temples, but shows many details. That seems to describe this obverse. Slight flatbess shows in curls of the shoulder. Your coin seems to exhibit that as well. LIBERTY is strong and stars have full detail. Your stars have points and this is where your coin gets difficult to grade.

On the reverse the bow and ribbon ends are worn but clear. That would be correct on your coin. Example photos are on page 56 of the ANA grading guild. I believe it is VF-30.

in an F12 stars have no central details. This is better than that and the hair curls also are very distinct. Unless this coin has been tooled, it is actually close to an EF40 but there is too much overall wear on the curls.

I was giving a harsh, PCGS grade My grade would be a strong VF-30

PCGS under grades? They usually over grade as compared to the ANA guild.

IMHO, Conder's nailed it as usual.

There is no way I could go VF on this half-cent. As Conder said... NET F-12, and that is about right IMHO.

Now if it is a good variety, I can't tell, but I would suggest that you check into that. Some of these varieties bring high dollar price tags.

My question is, "Would a major TPG grade this coin?"

My experience is that they don't like dark toning because they can't tell if it's hiding something.
I've had at least two coins body bagged for that reason.
