Very unnatural-looking for whatever reason, something post-Mint. I wouldn't spend much time or money on it, My Humble Opinion.

Some people did not like Kennedy. So they burned his likeness... in this case, the Half Dollar. It was a pretty big occurrence in the South especially, as I hear stories from my grandmother of her father burning them as soon as he got a hold of one.

South and Kennedy 2246 I lived in the south since 1975. I never hear anyone say anything bad about JFK but Teddy yes they hate!

Now back to the coin look like its been stained or heated to me

The reverse looks like it sat on a piece of rusting iron for awhile. No idea on the obverse.

IMHO, the coin was in a fire, then someone tried to clean it!

Hi,
There is no chance that this coin is an error of any kind. It would be a waste of hard earned money to have it sent anywhere to be looked at.

It is what we lovingly call "environmental damage". The metal detecting scenario is very plausible. So is spilling cola on it and having it sit for a long time.

Anything corrosive can cause a clad coin to look that way.

As suggested above, I have found many copper-nickel clad coins with a metal detector as well. I roll them up and cash them in and they look very much like this half.

Thanks,
Bill
