My Mood: | Two Shooting Thalers
My fav of the Shooting Thalers is the 1874 St. Gallen PCGS MS65 with a mintage of 15,000. The next Thaler is the 1885 Bern with a mintage of 25,000, of which is being sent into PCGS. Any marks seen on the 1885 Bern is on air tight it is in. I believe it will grade an MS64.

I can tell you that the coins are not cheap in high grade. The Swiss are known for their marksmenship, and hold shooting events around the country even to this day. The coins were minted for use at the shooting events, and were not minted in large numbers. Even though the coins were not given legal tender status, denominations indicated on the coin were given goverment consent. The denomination on the coin indicated that the shooting thalers had the same weight and fieness as the legal tender 5Fr. coins. These Thalers do have a cult like following. The coins do have a very high price tag in high grade due to its very low mintage. If you can afford one in high grade, you will not be sorry for paying the high dollar the coin brings.

I'm totally interested in these. They look awesome. I love stuff with those type of "themes" on them. I'm scared to start pricing them though..

Beautiful coins. You know, part of the whole Germanic "shooting club" thing is a pre-1848 desire for democracy. The shooting clubs were for citizens, allowing them to use arms (which, like a militia, could be used against despots), and this, plus the whole Goethe Natur Romanticism were big instigations.

The three key coins in the set will run into the thousand's in high grade. The 1874 St. Gallen I posted is an MS65, with a mintage of 15,000 will sell for around $600, and the 1869 Schwyz also posted has a mintage of 8,000 and is MS64 and can sell for $750. Now if you take the higher mintage ones like the Lugano of 1883 and a mintage of 30,000 you can find one for around $250 to $280 in AU55 to AU58.

Thanks for sharing the pics and info regandon.
Learned something new today and this Shooting Thaler series certainly looks beautiful and exciting although the prices are a bit off putting. But again good things comes at a price. |
