I don't really know the series, but it does have some areas that are lighter than others (around the stars, banner). It may be the strike. Just because its in a tpg holder doesn't mean its not cleaned.

I'm no professional, but it does seem to be cleaned. Look around the stars as well as the date and there is darker shades, possibly indicating the original color/ luster of the coin, JMO.

Am I seeing scratches, or is that just the plastic? Anyway, I would say cleaned at some point in time.

Tough call.
I wouldn't expect PCGS to slab a coin with that many obvious lines if they thought they were from a cleaning.
And I don't think they can claim "old cleaning/retoned" as has been done sometimes. BUT
If the lines were the result of die polishing I would expect them to run right up to the devices.
Since there appears to be untouched "borders" around all the devices I'm going to go with CLEANED.

I think it has been cleaned and dipped. I was offered an 1840 (NGC) that looked very similar.

I wolud say the coin has been dipped. It is tough to tell if it has been cleaned, but dipping a circ coin will give it a cleaned look.

Dipped - definitely. Harshly cleaned - no. That coin just received some very rough handling at the time it was new. And it appears that it was put away for a very long time shortly afterwards.

It is aparently a genuine PCGS holder. I personally don't like the coin.

PCGS gives these coins (seated dollars) a wide latitude for dipping/mishandling. If they didn't, there would be about two dozen slabbed for all dates.
This coin looks dipped, but doesn't look otherwise cleaned. These coins were big, and many were prooflike, and those combined characteristics make for some fugly circulated examples in AU grades.

I've got two (No Motto & Motto) that don't grade quite as high, but they sure look a lot better.
That coin has seen better days.

To me it appears HARSHLY cleaned. Looks like it has bad hairlines all over it. I would say it should have been a no question body bag.

It look harshly cleaned to me as well, the lines on the obverse are symmetrical. There many more coins that's not nearly as cleaned in apperance, yet are bodybagged....

The reason I think it is cleaned is that for a coin in this grade, there should be a lot more luster remaining- what I see is clinging to the edges of the devices. There also seem to be a lot of parallel hairlines, more than what I would expect from just circulation. The dipping speaks for itself.

dipped beyond belief and scratched up. Not a worthy coin IMO, but not harshly cleaned.
