1988 D Jefferson

I have recently found a 1988 Denver mint Jefferson nickel and it caught my eye by being very rough and hard to see. I later put the piece on a scale knowing that a normal piece for that year is 5 grams the piece that I have is less than 3 grams. Is there any information that anybody can tell me or ideas that anybody have?
