Same here! I never really knew toned coins existed until Lehigh96 opened my eyes with some of his beautiful coins (and pictures!!). Now I LOVE them! Even if I don't have any....I still think they're awesome and hope to have a nice collection of toned coins someday

I've learned a lot about grading, how to detect cleaning, TPGs, how to avoid getting ripped off, etc... but the most important has been to observe how intelligent collectors think about various collecting issues. You can't get that from a book.

When you post that you now understand that leaving the gold standard was good for the US economy then I'll know we made progress.

It seems less so every day. Practically every problem in the economy today stems from the fact that we do not have a permanent money supply. Instead, nothing gets done without credit and we are learning that there are limits to the amount of credit the economy can support, and the problems created when credit is withdrawn. There are sound alternatives to the gold standard, but a fiat debt-based currency doesn't happen to be one of them.

So there is no progress to report.

Right - if we were on a gold standard not only would have we suffered from whiplash over the last year but in addition we would have been able to bail out the banks and we'd be head long into a depression. Really it boggles my mind how your so stuck on this, being the bright individual you are.

I have learned a lot from GD and Mike D. and many other members. I see posts of beautiful coins and get lustful occasionally. I got a Budgood bag a while ago, that was fantastic. Mostly, I have expanded my interest in and knowledge about different type coins.

CT has made me much, much pickier as a coin consumer it has also sharpened my grading skills. Through the members of CT I have discovered the Bust issues and have a nice little Bust Collection (thanks, esp to Bonedigger). And as my knowledge increases, and I pass on what little nuggets I have, I find my collection is getting nicer.

Coin Talk has had absolutely no influence on me at all. I already know everything there is to know about everything.
Actually I think the most important thing about CT is the vast variety of individuals with so many different ideas, thoughts, information, interests, hobbies. I feel I've learned more about people than coins here. Of course this is a great place to learn about coins, books on coins, things to do with coins but I feel it's the people of CT that are really great and full of more info than could be found in most places or books.
Although I've collected coins for well over 60 years now, CT has been very informative of what I've collected but mostly why I've collected.

I think Cointalk along with the other Numismatic Forums that I belong to have had an impact on the way that I collect coins. I used to buy any nicely rainbow toned coin that I could find. Cointalk has shown me that many collectors focus more on strike and surface preservation than luster and eye appeal which is what makes a rainbow toned coin great.

I have learned that a true quality coin must have the correct balance of all of the elements of grading. As a result, I now own coins that I no longer think are great simply due to toning. Here is an example of a coin that really does not meet my standards anymore.

In the end it has made me a more discriminating collector. Not to mention that I think this is the most friendly coin forum out there hands down.

Thanks for the " refresher " Kirk, I had forgotten about that. That has to be the thread ( or find ) of the decade.
