My Mood: | Another 1922 weak d to analyze :-)
Ok,
so I picked this one up recently at normal 22-d price thinking it might be a weak d. It definitely fit the characteristics, and I was thinking die 1 at first. There is no rotation, and the obverse seems similar to a die 1 initially. However, there is NO die crack on the reverse like a die 1 pair should. Its not a die 3 because there is no rotation. Looking again at the obverse more carefully, you will notice that that the bottom of Lincolns coattail appears to merge with the rim. Well, at least there is not a distinct cutoff line like other lincolns, even though a lot of Lincoln's detail is still present. So this leads me to think it is a die 4?!? Are there any additional distinctions of a die 4 than the merging of the coattail as presented on this site? I'm really not familiar with this die variety as it seems uncommon compared to die1-3. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/1...varieties.html

I don't think you have anything there. Everything I see looks close to die #1 except the die cracks - plural because yours has one where there should be none, but not where it should be.
That crack from the e in "cent" to the e in "united" (at least' that is what it looks like to me), pretty much says it is not a recognized weak "D".

Yeah your probably right. I believe the area you pointed out as the die crack is correct. I wish I knew more about die 4 so I could be certain....but I think the obverse details on Lincoln are pretty strong for a weak d. Oh well, it was a $13 gamble.

Im not sure what Die Pair it is.. but for me, I wouldn't have wasted any money on that. Not for my personal collection, nor for resale.. Even if it brought a premium. a Garbage coin like that is not worth anyones time IMO

(just kidding by the way... ) | No, you're right. The corroded 31 S is garbage.. I put them on a different level. Natural garbage, and Harshly cleaned garbage.
Had that 31 S been attacked with an S.O.S. pad. I wouldn't have touched it.

No need to be mean about it... Still interesting for folks to learn from the pictures provided.
