My Latest 1882 Shield Nickel

I picked up this 1882 Shield Nickel at a coin show yesterday. Your thought regarding grade would be appreciated.

The coin looks better in-hand than my photos indicate. I am still perfecting my photographic skills.

at least AU+

Neat die crack on the left obv.

Or is that a planchet flaw?

Very nice looking coin. As us old timers would say. Yep she has eye appeal. I agree with AU and it looks like a lamination of the left obv. I also see what looks like a die crack from the rim to the N in cents.

Good eye there Hobo

I agree AU all the way. I love all the little die cracks on this coin - and I agree with Frank that almost looks like a planchet flaw. The die crack through United is cool, but the thing that I like the most is how crisp 1882 looks. I would probably put this coin at AU55 or AU58. Sweet coin.

AU55 or better

The coin in the photo looks like it could be AU55 or better. The photo does not show off any great luster but you say it is better in hand. If you see some luster & positive eye appeal with the coin in hand then I suspect it could be AU58.

Very best regards,

Thanks for your input. It appears unanimous - the coin is AU. It may be AU-55 or as high as AU-58. That makes me feel good.

I bought the coin for AU "Ask" (Greysheet) so you confirmed my grading. I really liked the strike, especially the date (like Mark H noted). I also like the die cracks and the beginnings of die cracks on the left obverse.

For some reason I seem to be drawn to Sheild Nickels. I like the design and I like all the little nuances they have (tons of die cracks, repunched dates, broken letters, etc.).
