1880 Morgan Silver Dollar - Counterfeit?

Hey everyone!

I was just searching eBay for Morgan's, when I came across this. The first thing I noticed was the denticles and rims on the obverse and reverse. I am pretty sure this is a counterfeit, but just want your opinion on it!

I see a lot of coins like this, with triple rims and double denticles, and I just stay away from them because they all have an odd look.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1880-MORGAN-SILV...QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks!

I cant tell if it's fake or not ? I personally dont like the comments about the coin. Im iffy if someone writes that they are not qualified to comment on the coin but hten go on to say that it's a "cameo" full of "luster" etc..,

Yep.

What's more, he says he's "not qualified to grade coins", yet this one is "part of a very fine collection <he> recently obtained".

How many folks are purchasing high-end collections, yet lack the ability to grade the darn things ?

Here's another one from that seller:

Look at the O in ONE on the reverse and the weak UNITED? Looks like this seller is on a roll?

I think you're onto something here Ryan!

Criminy! Look at the eagle's beak. Looks like somebody smashed it in. You know, these have the same color as the replica coin without the stamp, posted in another thread here about the legality of selling them.

various letters of this coin on the reverse are wildly different from an authentic coin, If this was genuine, this would be extremely expensive. I would avoid this seller like the plague.

some of the letters are wildly different then they would be on an authentic coin, And judging by the large amount of other highly questionable coins this seller has for sale, I would avoid this seller like the plague.

He said he's not qualified to GRADE the coin. That doesn't necessarily preclude his ability to mention "Cameo" and "Luster". Ebay frowns on unfounded grade descriptions, but not on verbal descriptions.

Both coins have been pulled.

eBay is the biggest crock of poo poo going.

SGS "Star Grading Service" still lists its coins with a grade mentioned in the auction title.
Mr SGS has taken his crap up to the next level, Ebay live auctions.

It seems ebay has many different sets of rules depending on who you are and how much money you spend there a month.

I am totally disgusted with ebay and what it has turned into.
I listed there the other day for the first time in 3 months and I felt so dirty afterwards.

Anyway that's another whole thread
