Whats wrong with just holding them in your hand? They are COINS, usually circulated ones.

Its fine to hold them with your hands as long as you hold them by the rims/edge.
If you don't they can get fingerprints.
Now with circulated coins...your not going to get fingerprints but after a while you might wear down some detail and lower the value of your coin.

From what i understand the best way to hold a coin is by the edges with light cotton gloves, for the sake of argument is it also safe to hold the a coin with gloves, on the face of the coin. |

If I might make a suggestion - you should read what you can find by - Clicking Here
Once you have done that, you will find plenty of information that will greatly help you as a collector by spending some time in this area of the Forum - Numismatic Resources
In this area you can find the answers to just about any question you can ask. It will help you, that's what it's there for. Of course you can always ask questions here or in other areas of Coin Talk. But check it out, it might even be fun
PS - if you haven't already, please go back to the first page of this thread and read all of the posts. You will also find these links - How To Hold a Coin - 1 How To Hold a Coin - 2

Being a comic book collector for 3 decades, reading this thread on holding a coin seems amusing. This goes under the rule I have that I don't purchase ANYTHING I'm afraid to handle.

| Better change that rule...one fingerprint can lower a coins value up to 50%.

I always hold every coin by the rim/edge no matter what grade. If in a 2x2, hold the 2x2 by the edge. This is especially true when it isn't mine.

My sister wanted to look at one of my proof coins.
Dated 1979, immaculate it was.
My sister took it out it's sleeve and was holding it thumb over the front, index on the back...I dived at her to take it away before she could do anymore damage.
She said 'it's only a coin', luckily with a light wipe from a bit of fabric the recently made prints were eradicated.
I also once bought a silver proof coin straight from the royal mint...it arrived to me seeled in a box, then in a capsule...but on the queens face was a very noticeable thumb print...I was so annoyed.
The coin was 3 weeks late in delivery anyway...so I couldn't be bothered to return it.
As it happens, I have bought this years version of the coin...and it is currently 11 days late in delivery...I hope this one is print free.

I would say no--in fact IMHO you can hold a coin by the edge without the gloves---I never use them as they almost make you more prone to drop the coin than if you didn't have on the gloves.

My Mood: | coin dealer handling coins
went to a local coin dealer first visit am a newbie. I took some Morgans to get his opinion. He advertises grading for free. Couldn't believe the way he handled my coins. They were uncircs rolled. He pealed the paper off...dropped the coins on a glass surface...and proceeded to 'rifle' thru the coins dropping them on each other and the glass. I have handled my coins with gloves. I wasn't impressed with his reverance for the coin.
When I called to make an appointment he advised me that I would be disappointed with his grading. Throught he had a negative and predisposed attitude. Maybe this is why he is such a small dealer. Others must feel the same.
Am I being too critical...is this the way it is done? Or just a sensitive newbie!
