Question 1822 Matron Head Cent - Guess Grade

Guess the NGC grade! I bought this coin in April from early copper specialist Doug Bird (super friendly) at the Chicago Central States show. It has a few warts and I wasn't sure it would slab, but it isn't a bad example of the type. I will probably upgrade it someday, but for now it is a type that I'd like to keep in my collection. The Matron Head large cent design of Miss Liberty has to be one of the most unflattering of all her renditions, but nonetheless, I like it.

This 1822 mintage is a little over 2M and the variety is a N-6 - a R3 coin. I'm not the best photographer and trying to get good shots on copper and reflective slabs is a bad combination for me.

Please guess the NGC grade:

Note the slight reverse rotation (kinda cool to me):

OK, what grade did NGC give for this coin?

Nice coin, I'd like to have 1 of everything issued in the 1820's, just because I like the shape of the 2's in the date. I'll guess AU50, because the back shows almost 0 wear, but a little more on the obv. Really nice and original

Since my first obverse photo is kinda dark, here's a pre-slab picture of the obverse - note I did say it has some warts! Interestingly (?), the red spash is not as evident in the slab but maybe I just don't have the right lighting for it is stand out or they did something to reduce it at NGC.

(deleted this pic and replaced obverse pic in first post)

Yes - I remember it now. The lighting does make a difference - but I will hold off and see what NGC graded it. Still a nice coin.

Looks just like my 1821 XF 45, so that's my guess.

Nice color on that one!

XF45 it is! I think the grade is fine for this coin. Wear in the hair and face.

Leadfoot, your 1821 key date XF45 is awesome for the grade and would be most appropriate to post here in this thread! That way, it will prove a point that not all equally graded NGC/TPGs are the same.

Here it is, and again, I think your coin compares very well with it:

p.s. the CAC agreed with the grade (NGC XF 45) and awarded it a green sticker.
