Hello All

Hello,

My name is Rev. Handy and I am the Pastor of The New Testament Bible Church located here in Monroe, Louisiana. I am new to this community and would like to get to know many of you. I do not know anything about coins and thats why I am here today seeking help from this community.
Just recently a member of my Church gave me two old coins, which are a dollar in value. One is an US 1884 coin and the other is a US 1923 coin and I think both are gold coins.
If these coins are of some value I would like to sell them and use them funds for our Church. So if you have any information regarding these coins please forward that to me.. I look foward to hearing from you and I thank you in advance for your time and consideration...

Chris Handy

Welcome to CT, Reverand.

Is this a riddle? (Just kidding.) Can you give us a little more info on these coins? Is each one "a dollar in value" or are the two "a dollar in value" when added together? We really need a little more info to help you. Post a photo of the coins if possible or at least give us a better description of the coins.

Hello Chris....
Welcome to Coin Talk...
I guess you are referring to the face value of the coins and not their numismatic value. None of the dollar coins from that period were gold but silver. They might be gold plated in which case their value will be lowered to melt and also it depends what condition they are in. Pictures will certainly help determining that. Post the pics in What's it worth section.

Actually, Gold $1 coins were minted in 1884 (but not in 1923). (The Grant Memorial Commemorative Gold $1 was minted in 1922.)

Welcome Reverend! As others have stated, we can help you determine the value of the coins, but more information is needed. And pictures would be best.

Welcome Reverend! Most has been said above in relation to the coins. I have seen dollars of those dates that an old timer had stored, wrapped in old newspaper and stored in a tobacco can for 50+ yrs, that were very Golden in color from the effects of the paper ( and possibly the tobacco can storage so they may actually be made of silver. Pray for gold though, for the fund's sake. Blessings!
