Well at one time I had a fantastic type set and a couple of rolls of uncirculated 1946-D Walkers. Then Viet-Nam came along (two tours), got married, went back to college, and had two children. You can imagine what was the priority at that time, and the coins were sold to private parties for what was a nice profit at that time.
Never owned a twenty cent piece or a bust quarter ... never could find one that met my standards.
So gone is a group of coins that today would probably bring no telling how much money today. I have no regrets, but I am sure that I saved back a Gem BU 1892 Barber Quarter. Don't ever recall selling that coin, and every now and then I start looking into storage trunks to see if my mother might have put it in there for safe-keeping while I was overseas.
Another thing that I miss and was unable to retrieve was my old ANA number. Started out as a junior member and then progressed to regular membership, keeping the same number without the J prefix. Contacted ANA about reinstituting my membership, but to keep that number would require back payment of almost 40 years. Could have bought several life memberships at that price.
My classic favorite today is the Morgan series. Those coins just stand out among all the others series ever minted IMHO. Did have the opportunity many years ago when I was home on leave to see a friend's complete Morgan Dollar Set in several Capital Plastic holders. He had hand-picked these coins for many years. Most were Gem DMPL, and he included all of the Proof coins as well. What an impressive set that was! Several months later while I was overseas, I received a letter from a fellow collector, informing me that this set which he had displayed on a mantle in his home was stolen. I am still sick about that and have since forever kept my coins locked in safety-deposit boxes at the bank.
I think the State Quarters and Presidential Dollar series will do wonders to get new collectors into the hobby, but the coin designs look terrible to me. Collectors used to say the same about the Peace Dollar series.
Bottom line ... collect whatever you like and enjoy one of the greatest hobbies there is.
