My Mood: | I resisted (and please guess the grade too)
I went to the coin shop today and almost bought a 1723 Farthing, DEL GRATIA REX Half Penny for $75....but we couldn't agree on the grade (I thought a VG and he thought it was an F), so I didn't buy it.
Then I almost bought a 1941-D Mercury Dime in NGC, MS-65 with FB for $30, but I don't know how comman these are or how much of a premium FB's carry so I didnt buy that (but was about to for the type set, should I go back and buy it?)
I know you guys are prolly saying "who cares", but I feel good that I didn't do anything stupid.
While I was in there for 2 hours (literaly) thinking about it, I bought this for $5 (and it was the only thing I bought), what do you think the grade is, I think a VG:

You're getting better As for the coin you bought, it would be considered ungradeable due to the severe corrosion. Not that you did bad buying it for $5, but is now and will forever be a problem coin. But if you like it - that's all that matters.

In my opinion $30 sounds reasonable, but wait for other opinions. Of course this is assuming you think the coin is nice and a MS65 FB is the grade. I did see where one NGC MS66 went for 31 and shipping on Ebay, but that was not the general trend.
Nothing wrong with filling a hole for $5 with that coin as long as you like it.

Nice exercise of restraint there Stainless.
$30 for the 41-D in that shape isn't bad but you used restraint again instead of just dropping money.
Hope the dealer was waiting on other customers while you were there for $5 though. Not much of a return for his time.
My rule of thumb when I go into a shop (that's reputable) is if you spend time, shoot the breeze and maybe learn a thing or two buy SOMETHING.
Dealers DO warm up when they see that you're serious and learning. If they have a bigger deal going on let them concentrate on that. Patience on both sides of the counter can work wonders.

Stainless not bad for $5 , but I'd listen to GD , skip on problem coins , there's always another day & another coin , I'm still working on that advice , most of know the feeling , you hate to leave without anything , but sometimes it's better to leave with nothing , than something that's going to be a problem in the future .
The 1941-D MS-65 FSB would make a nice type coin , at $30 not bad at all .

To me $30 sounds like a fair price on the dime if it's attractive.
Probably not if it's ugly.

Nobody else found the $75 farthing curious? If its a Hibernia farthing, that may be reasonable. A 1723 in F (British grade, if I recall British F is better than US F) catalogues for 30 pounds. If it was on the VG side, as you said, probably lower still. Still, I would look for that coin in the $30-$40 range, regardless of VG or F.
