Smile An All Digital Contest

This contest is closed - way to go Cheryl!!

Note: The big change is you must still take the digital photo yourself but the final image you submit does not have to have the camera properties. If that is the case, then send me the original photo and the picture you are submitting that uses an aspect of the original photo to me. Some editors do not maintain the properties so this should make it easier to submit something that will be accepted.

As many know I enjoy photography and art. This contest will test your ability to show your creative side. Here are the rules:
  • Take a Digital photo of coins and/or currency from any country issued by a legitimate government. Tokens and fantasy currency will not be accepted. Official Commemorative Coins will be accepted as it applies to the rules above.
  • The picture cannot be just a standard plain picture like what is used on CT - there must be a creative element to it
  • You must email me the actual digital photo (EDIT: and the final version of the photo in the event your photo-editor does not maintain the camera properties) to verify the original photo properties - PM me and I will give you the email address to send the photo to. my work email has a much larger capacity so this would be preferred to my home email.
Note - You can view properties of the file as shown here - the photo must be taken with a digital camera and the properties must be available to verify authenticity

  • The photo can be edited using photo-shop like applications but the original file must be sent and contain its digital photo properties. Flatbed scanners and 35mm photos converted to digital form will not qualify.
  • Two entries per CT member - no exceptions / no exclusions
  • You can choose to (or not) post your image in this thread during the contest - all accepted photos will be posted at the end of the contest.
  • I will email you to notify you if the photo meets the contest criteria
  • Entry ends at 4pm EST June 9th 2008 - If you do not hear back from me within 24 hours on a submitted photo please PM me to notify me. All valid entries will be posted that evening.
  • Winners will be selected by a three member panel of judges (Wife, 8 year old Son, Me ) and the photos selected by the three of us will be drawn from a hat to determine a single winner. As each of us may select the same photo there may be anywhere from one to three entries for the final drawing. One person may have multiple entries in the final drawing in the event both submitted photos are selected by different judges. All three of us will select independently and without discussion or influence. The winner will be announced by 8PM EST on June 10th 2008.
  • I stress that you must own the rights to the photo used and have taken it yourself!
For the winner - a set of brand new Digital Callipers. These are in an unopened plastic bag in the case. I bought two sets of these back in November and the winner will get the second set as a prize. I had my set calibrated to verify the quality of the measurements! Note - The set you receive will not be calibrated. They are a great tool and can be used not only for our hobby but in many other applications.

Good Luck and please enjoy the process of being creative and showing off our hobby in an artistic form that extends beyond that of the coins and/or currency. Please PM or post any questions and I will clarify as quickly as possible.

Best Regards ~ Darryl

I am afraid that is the one drawback that I considered - you have to have access to a digital camera to participate. I am sorry for those that would join but don't have a digital camera to use.

I also look forward to those that do join in on the fun. I have seen some of the work semi-professional photographers have done with coins/currency and I think we could as good if not better. Give it a go and see what you can come up with!

Question - by meaning two entries, would it mean strictly two images, i.e. by posting both obverse and reverse will mean two entries?

Yes - that would be two entries. If you want to show the obverse and reverse of the same coin you may want to consider merging multiple pictures to create a single image. You have to use an editor that will support that while maintaining the image data.

Plain single color backgrounds of coins/currency with nothing else in the frame will not be accepted. The idea is to be creative with your image.

Here is an example of the type of data that is no longer complete:

By right mouse clicking on the file and selecting properties you can view the data under summary.

Let me know if this helps.

These are some examples of what I have in mind:

Only one of these are mine and I am sure all of you can figure out which one it is. The other four are examples from a different web site and are the property of the people that posted them on that site. To directly answer your question Cheryl - yes you could submit the example posted and I would except it (if it has the photo data) but it is not really what I am looking or hoping for. Hope the examples help to give everyone some ideas.

LOL - was he grazing near three mile island? Very interesting edit! PM me if you want to submit it and it still contains the photo data.
