An Islamic coin - a silver dirhem weighing 3 grams - dated 805 AD has been found near Oslo, Norway. Archaeologists speculate that the coin was brought to the region by Vikings. This coin is the earliest Islamic coin found in the Norwegian countries predating other examples by at least 100 years. Quote: |
According to Houshang Khazaei, a researcher at the University of Oslo, the coin was minted in Mohammadiyyah in Iran. The ruler at the time was Harun al-Rashid, the fifth and most famous of the Abbasid caliphs.
