The use of "currency" as paper money

I've noticed that some people use the term "currency" to mean paper money...
However, the definition of currency is essentially money (has no specific meaning as to either coin or paper money).

I was wondering how this came about? that certain people will use currency to = paper money?

I was also wondering if there was another "real" word for paper money?

and, by the way, in my little thing under the name I use currency to mean money

The general public uses the term "paper money" while collectors use the term "currency".

It's similar to "pennies" and "cents".

(Guess I'll put on my fireproof suit now.)

I call it currency as well. Just flows better than saying "I collect coins and paper money".

As a "currency" collector "bill" is the word that irritates me. Bills are BAD notes are GOOD.

I use the term currency to describe bills as well. When I do deposits at work I have three: coin, currency, and checks.

Yes, Yes, Yes, Great Questions... Great Answers...

Everyone is correct...mostly. I have done some extensive research on this same issue; but would require another lengthy post. However, if you will view my most recent post "History Of Missouri and the Yoachum Silver Dollar" Pgs.13,14,15,16,17,18. in this forum. You may find some of those answers or at least an overview to your questions. Thanks

I've wondered about that before too. I either say paper money or banknotes
