Well, I am doing my first coin show this weekend, and I was hoping to solicit some advice from some current and former dealers on what to expect being on the other side of the table. I guess I should probably introduce myself first though. My name is Tony, married, twin daughters,7, and a son, 4. I have been collecting for about 6-7 years, and love the fact that it seems as though I learn something new every day. I inherited part of my grandfather's collection and have been obsessed ever since.

Howdy Tony - Welcome to the Forum !!
You will find that dealers run the gamut. Some will be quite friendly and others will be as grouchy as a troll. Some will haggle and some will not. Coin dealers are like all other people - it takes all kinds to make a world.
Just go into the show with an open mind, ears and eyes. You will learn a lot.

Welcome, Tony. This is a great hobby. Be sure to get educated about the coins you plan to buy before you buy them.
What do you plan to collect?

Thanks for the replies, but I guess I was kind of ambiguous with my first post. By doing my first show, I meant as a "dealer." But as far as my collecting goes, I have completed a lincoln wheat set minus the svdb, BU Franklin set, a gold type set (no $4), and a BU Roosevelt set. I was thinking about finishing off my grandfather's buff set, but we'll see. Since I can't really afford to collect at the present time, last year I decided to start selling that way I could continue to collect under the guise of a business(keeps momma happy, kinda).

Welcome! First thing I'm wondering is, are you already a dealer? I mean do you have a shop, sell on ebay, or at a flea market? Or do you just have alot of coins you want to sell and are setting up a table at a show? Or do you work for another dealer? I personally have only sold a few coins. But the questions above should determine where your at as a dealer and what kind of experience you've had, which I think will help the more experienced folks here determine what kind of advie to give you. Again, welcome to cointalk!
p.s. oops. I guess I missed the last part of your last post. Still though, I think folks here would better know what kind of advice to give you if they knew how much experience you have in the business.

I don't really like to call myself a dealer, although the IRS has no problem doing so, but I guess I am. I do not have a shop, I have sold a little on EBay(fees were too high for me even before the change, so you can imagine how I feel about it now), I do sell at an antique mall, which I have actually done halfway decent at. Even though I've only been around coins for a short time compared to a lot of people here, I feel I've gained a good amount of numismatic knowledge, but I know I still have a lot to learn (I think numismatics is something even the most vetern participants can and should still learn new things all the time). I guess I just want to know kind of what to expect, or just little things that other dealers have found that work or don't work.

I also bought about $100 face of silver this weekend at 13.5 times face, so hopefully I'll be able to unload enough of that to cover the table fee as long as silver doesn't drop.
