My Mood: | Mintmark placement on Mercury Dime
Hello, this is an early date mercury that I found on ebay and am thinking about bidding on. But the mint mark doesnt look right to me. Ive never seen one placed where this one is placed. So, before any bidding on my part happens, I just wanted to ask opinions here. Has anyone else seen coins with the mint mark placed where this one is??? All the mercs Ive seen, the mint mark was always in the same spot or real close to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks |

DJP:
What date is it?
I will check my references for any info.
But, it is unusual.
However, unless it is, well, I can't think of a SF Merc worth faking.

its not a special date so I doubt anyone was trying to fake anything here. Its just a 1917 S. So Im not thinking its an added mint mark it just doesnt look right to me.

Since the mintmark was added by hand late in the die making process they tended to "wander" and show up in various places.
Yours appears to have wandered a bit further than normal.

Well, its not my coin. But its one I want to bid on. Its about to end, and I just thought the mint mark looked to be too far off. So naturally, I wanted to hear opinions from the experts and this is just the place to get that. Anyhow, with the mintmark moved that far over, would it make a difference to you when it comes to, would you bid or not???

Bid? yes. How much? As if it were itself and nothing unusual about it - you tell me how much that might be.

Since I would not have a warm fuzzy feeling about that coin, I'd pass.
Another will be along shortly.

Let us know if you get it.
The price appears reasonable.

There were small and large S mintmarks in 17. The smaller, closed S is often found punched close to the stalk. This is an example of that reverse. It's hard to say whether one is more valuable than the other. Maybe the buyer thinks so.
