Stack's Kroisos Collection Auction

I received my auction catalog today and all I can say is WOW.
For anyone who loves world gold and does not get Stack's auction catalogs this is one of those "special" auction catalogs that you have got to get .... if nothing else for reference to some wonderful world gold coins in fully color photos with great descriptions. These gold coins are for the most part uncommon and/or rare and the estimates are very pricey This collection is an Eliasberg type collection on HGH (quality not quantity) .... to quote Stack's " making the January 2008 Kroisos Collection auction one of the greatest in the firm's history".

I had hoped to add a coin or two to my collection but wasn't counting on having to take out a second mortgage on my house

The auction is not yet listed on their website but I would guess it will be online within a few days ..... Everyone you have to visit and browse ..... I promise you will find these coins unbelievable

Doug................. you will not be disappointed !!!!!!

Louisiana is a little closer to NY than Utah ... at least a day

I have a general question for you for a friend of mine ... If you were going to buy a coin from this auction for a price in the $5-10K range would you feel comfortable basing a bid upon Stack's grading & description coupled with the catalog and internet photos or would he be better served by actually physically observing the coin in hand in NYC?

That's a toughy. I've paid that much for coins that I had not yet seen in hand, but only from a dealer that I had a long relationship with and explicity trusted and that had a no questions asked return policy.

Best bet, if you're gonna spend that much, buy the ticket and go look for yourself. But it might be an expensive trip - he/she/you might be tempted to buy more than 1 coin. If ya know what I mean

Actually it's been there since yesterday. There are a couple of Japanese coins I'd love to add to my collection, but frankly I think the very pricey estimates will probably be quite a bit below the hammer price.

It is quite unusual when they are not.

I agree, those 'price estimates' are useless. One has to do more research than that, if in fact relevant statistics are available.
