Roll Searching Nickels

Went through $20 in nickels today. Pretty much the standard dates except for a couple.

I found:

1. 1948S - Reverse is not bad but Obv. is gouged in a couple spots
1. 1944P - First silver found roll hunting :-)
1. 1994 Canadian Cent

Common dates -

1. 1941P
1. 1957P
1. 1958D
1. 1960P
1. 1960D
1. 1961P

Found a number of 1964D's that I will have to check at home under better magnification. After reading Speedy's post I have to be more careful checking these. They are heavily circulated though so I am not sure if anything will be left from a DDR or RPM.

I filled a couple holes so I'm happy ...

I have recently started doing this exact same thing, roll searching nickels. In about 13 rolls so far I have managed to complete a set from 1969-date and need only the 68-D and S to go back thru 64. I have found only 1 war nickel, but about 7 or 8 from the 1938-1961 era. I will continue this because it's fun, and I bet that before long, I have most from 1960-date. I bought a set of nickel folders and just hope to fill all the hole myself. The rule is that it's got to come from a roll or circulation, so some dates will be a challenge, but attainable.

enjoy...

Thanks Mike,

I'm doing the same thing for the 38 to 61 nickel set. The 40's look like they are going to be real tough. I am still missing 9 from the 50's, 4 from the 30's, and 17 from the 40's. I have probably gone through $300 hundred (maybe more) in nickels so far.

Good Luck!

I'm sure there are some others but here are some nickel errors to look out for:

1939 :: Words (Monticello & Five Cents doubled on back)
1942D :: up-right "D" stamped over a Horiz."D"
1942-1945 :: These were made of 35% silver during the war (except for the 1942 and 1942D). The mint marks are on the back above the Monticello.
1943 :: Double Date 1943 stamped over 1942
1943P :: Liberty, the Date, & Jefferson's EYE is Doubled
1944 :: 1944 nickels without the mint mark on the reverse are counterfeits.
1945P :: Double Die Reverse
1946D :: up-right "D" stamped over a Horiz."D"
1946S :: Doubling of the Date & Liberty visible
1949 :: "D" stamped over an "S" mintmark
1954 :: "S" stamped over the "D" mintmark or "S" over "S"
1955 :: "D" stamped over an "S" mintmark
1964 :: RPM's and DDR
1971S :: Some Proof Nickels of this year were made without a mintmark. They are very rare errors.
1979S :: Found with "Blob" and Clear mintmarks, with the Clear version being the rarer of the two.
1981S :: Found with clear and "blob" mint marks.
1990D :: Missing "FS"
1997P Matte :: Special uncirculated Nickels were included in the 1997 Botanic Gardens Sets. They are extremely well struck, like Proof coins, but have a satiny, matte appearance.

I thought the war nickels were made of 35 % silver?

That's a nice summary, that should be a sticky somewhere.

Actually, five boxes from someone using NF String & Son wrappers/boxes. String is the largest US supplier of those items, but doesn't actually wrap coins itself.

Most of my pre-64 nickels are from rick. I have been pretty successful getting all pf my 1964-present nickels from circulation here in Canada, including D and S mints. It's a bunch of the earlier ones I still need to find. One of these days I'll head down to Buffalo and see if I can pick up a box to search. (I can't take more than one box worth out of the country thanks to the new laws! )

those are some very nice finds! i noticed you keep the S mints too. i made a list of all the lower mintage nickels awhile back that i keep. i keep the 1960,1961,1962,1965,1967,1968D,1968S,1969S,and the 1971 nickels. i figured since they switched the design around, these coule be worth something in the future. i usued to keep every 1970S i found, but there is just too many out there, so i don't keep them anymore.
