I have never bid on ebay- Please help!

I have never bid on eBay before. Except for the American Silver Eagle Proof and Uncirculated coins purchased from the US Mint, I do not have any of our old coins. Today I saw Walking Liberty Half Dollars on eBay, and made a bid which instantly was outbid on item # 300151924835. Now I understand the reason for the "instant outbid". My questions are as follows:

- What would be a reasonable bid for this set?
- What should I be careful of (on this item)?
- What do you see, or do not see, which will raise a red flag in your mind, etc.
- Can I collect a similar set from a local dealer? I have never purchased any coins from coin dealers either. In other words, I am pretty naive when it comes to collecting coins...
- What other questions should I ask which I have not asked regarding bidding on eBay? I will read up on "learning how to bid" at eBay's site soon.

Is it appropriate to ask the above questions on this forum? I have been a member of CoinTalk for about a year now and have learned a lot just by visiting 10-15 minutes daily. If I am out of line, please redirect this query to an appropriate forum, or please advise as to who would be able to help.

Thanks!

Hi, I looked up the auction......
Hmmm..... These are listed as MS in a folder.......

Who Knows? AU 53? MS60? or less...?. As far as the limited auction description I would not bid on this item site unseen, much less pay anything 1/4 of the buy it now
.......

too risky with coins you can`t see in person, the pics aren`t good enough...

I buy and sell coins in the 4 figure range at times. You need to deal with someone you know, raw coins with REALLY REALY good pics, or certfied coins you are familiar with, that also have really really good pics.....

Sets describe as Gem BU are sold by online dealers and ebay for around $600+, you can also look up completed auction result on ebay, that will tell you how approx. much the cost are selling for.

you had to pick one of the hardest coins to grade. I love my

walkers

The first thing i'd do before I buy any coins any where is learn to

grade the coins you want to buy. there are many out there that

will tell you a coin will grade ms60 and it will do good to make it

to very fine. slabed coins are getting hard to buy now also,

people are grading there own coins at home. if you buy graded

coins go with the big like pcgs ngc anacs even pci isnt as bad

as some out ther today...

I don’t know if you are close enough for the long beach coin and stamp show at the long beach convention center but if you can get there that is the largest coin show annually in California. Starts 9/27 through 9/29 in two weeks. There about a couple hundred dealers there should be able to find what you want. Also is worth it just to look around.

mANY PEOPLE ON EBAY WILL ACCEPT A 7 DAY RETURN ON THEIR COINS IF NOT SATISFIED. IT IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU LOOK A AN INDIVIDUALS FEEDBACK TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT THAT PERSON HAS SOLD IN THE PAST BEFORE YOU MAKE A BID. I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU DO MUCH RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING ANY BIDS ON EBAY TO GET A FEELING ON WHAT THE ITEMS YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ARE SELLING FOR. AND BY ALL MEANS STAY AWAY FROM THE TV ADVERTISERS, THWEY ARE RUINING THE JOYS OF COLLECTING!

your wellcome im sure you will love it there. i found out about it a few years ago and i have been going twice every year since. there is a five dollar parking spot just north west of the convention center with the old carrosel roof being renovated in one corner.it is north of islands resturant. i usally come down pacific avenue and turn left in the far right lane you will see a sign that will read parking $5.00 cant miss it. last year at this time however there was some other event that caused the price to go up to ten dollars all day hopfully that wont happen again this year.

I'd love to go to the Long Beach show just once. Long Beach is where I was born but I've never been there for any length of time. I bet its a great show.

tdm,

Thanks for the parking tip! I think I will show up there and see what coin shows are all about. I hope they have a booth where they sell AirTites, silica packets etc. for storing the coins.

I've gone twice this year, didn't find prices especially great but bargained down everything I bought and found coins I had been unable to acquire from local dealers. I am planning to go again this time.
