| 1880 3 dollar gold coin only 1000 minted
Only 1000 were ever minted of this coin!
I am currently having it graded by PCGS - any ideas on what someone would pay for it? http://www.cointalk.org/images/smilies/14.gif |

Howdy EC - Welcome to the Forum !!
Assuming it's authentic - I'd say about $600.

I agree with GDJMSP. I unfortunately do not think PCGS will grade it as I believe it was polished.

only $600? Hm... I think it has to be worth more than that. It's not polished - it is just that I took the photo through plastic so it gave off a shine. PCGS is sending it back to me on the 12th - Ill post its grade then.

It's just reflection IMO. Looks like it has nice luster. Maybe AU55...can't tell for sure as I know nothing of this series.

I agree that the reflection and possibly some hazing of the plastic or mylar (as it appears to be in a 2x2 or other type coin holder) makes the coin appear of a less grade than it actually is! I copied and pasted the images to my PC, added contrast, cropped them and have attached the edited images below which show that the coin is in fact a much higher grade. From the edited pics, I believe that the coin will at least grade AU-50 but may go even higher as I believe that even with the editing, the plastic or mylar is still detracting from the true condition and quality of the coin! Therefore, I believe that the coin should fetch at least $3,000 but may go much higher, if the coin is actually of a higher grade and also due to the low mintage.

Just for reference.....
In the last auction I went to, an 1878 in Unc went for $1800.
Your coin has a lower mintage.
I don't know what to grade your coin at, but it books for $4000 in AU-55.
I hope that helps a bit. |

Reckon we'll see. IMO the coin would grade VF at best. However I think it has been harshly cleaned ( thus the low estimate ) and that PCGS will body-bag the coin.
'Course I've been wrong before.

| The Coin is Graded!
PCGS graded the coin and marked it as an XF45. Im happy with that although my friend, who is a coin "expert" supposedly, said it was no less than an AU. Well - PCGS hsa spoken and Im not too unhappy with it. EDITED---No offers to buy/sell/trade please.
p.s. This coin ins ms64 went for over $18,400. I know that is no indication on the value on this coin - but it's still cool and worth mentioning

Although when I copy and paste the pictures to my PC and blow them up, the coin appears to have at least AU-50 details, I am happy that it graded EF-45! Considering the grade and that it now resides in a PCGS holder, the coin should fetch about $2,500 but I wouldn't be suprised if it only brings $2,000 or brings as much as $2,800 at auction.
Good luck...Frank
