Need expertise on 1794 large cent on ebay

I am looking at a 1794 large cent on ebay. Price starts at $726. I want it for my grandsons type set. I can't afford a 1793. the number is 290108097048. This person has a very good reputation on ebay and at shows. Could someone put this number on so that it can be clicked on. I haven't learned how to do that yet. Do you think this is a fair buy for this condition at this price? Thanks for your help.

Never ever buy from this seller. Advice, Ernie is not a good seller to deal with. He overgrades and over prices all the coins he lists. There are better fish in the sea

That coin has too much corrosion for that price ,Id stay away~You can find a better one for less from a seller that doesnt protect all of their coins with high starting bids or reserves.

Ed,
I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for, but here are a couple ebay auctions to look at if you haven't already, which are priced at or below the one above, that I think are priced semi-ok:

I just haven't seen anything better for less on ebay, and I have been looking for months'..Atleast you know you are not getting a fake coin. I believe the man is honest.. You can also work with him on price up here in the northeast..I have talked to him at shows, and he seems like a likeable guy...

Instead of looking on ebay - talk to dealers.

I won't disagree with that, however, he does overgrade every raw coin and he ask more than they are worth, usually a lot more. You would be far better off to deal elsewhere.

Only months - I have been looking for over a year for certain coins. Not just Ebay, but heritage also. I do know that you must show a lot of patience in finding the right coin, right grade and right price. I lose a lot of auctions on Ebay because I will not go the ridiculous prices that some want. I also like the idea of finding a coin show(or dealers) near you, where you can see what you are really getting.

Good Luck!

You may want to try David Lawrence Rare Coins. They usually have some nice early copper. Their website is www.davidlawrence.com .

It seems like you are trying to find something with decent details, with an non-messed with planchet. You mentioned you are in the Northeast. Are you in Pennsylvania by chance? If so, and you would like, let me know and I can PM you the name of some wonderful Early Copper guys who may have something at a very fair price that is problem free for the grade.

This Ernie has a lot of stuff, what I glanced at seems to be stuff with problems, overgraded, cleaned, nothing slabbed.

He must crack any slab and re-grade ?

I don't know 1793 too well, but VG with no date ?

I would pass on this coin (and the others posted to this thread). At most shows you should be able to find a more attractive and affordable example...Mike
