| Type Coin List
I am attempting to finish a Dansco 7070 Type Set album. To help with my search, and to provide information, I bought the Whitman Red Book United States Type Coins Guidebook. Each of the types is listed with a WCG Type number. This is the "Whitman Coin Guide" type number. Most of the coins are WCG1, WCG 2, etc. However, some of the numbers are skipped. Does anyone know where I can find a "list" of the WCG types, either in Excel form, or as a typed document? By what list do you "type" collectors go by? Is there a standard list that most type collectors use? Or is it just by personal preference? I'm just curious as to the way some of the other type collectors assemble their collections. By the way...below is a great website that includes a ton of information about type collecting, including some great type lists in Excel format. If this is redundant information, just disregard. http://typesets.wikidot.com/start |

The WCG numbers are used in Whitman Publishing's "Whitman Coin Guide" aka the "US Coin Types Red Book", a companion work to the better known "Guide Book of United States Coins" Red Book.
A Google search on "Whitman Coin Guide", should find several choices of where to buy it for <$20.
Not being a type set collector, I can't say much about the rest of your questions.

I already have the book (it's a great book by the way..and I recommend it whole heartedly), but the list of WCH types is not in the book. I can just go through the chapters and list them as they come along..but they skip numbers..which is a reason I'm looking for an actual list.

They may have constructed the list with some numbers reserved for future use. Why don't you email an inqujiry to Whitman at books@wwhitman.com?
Good luck.

I'm trying to fill that same album myself... think of it as basically a type set from the 19th century to the present (it skips coins only made in the 18th century, most of which are rare in any kind of decent condition). There's an optional gold page you can add to it to that has types for gold coins from 1839 to 1932.
Only thing that annoys me about it is the slots for commemoratives... I think any type set should exclude coins never intended for circulation (means shouldn't be a lost for an American Silver Eagle either, but filled it any way for the heck of it). Kind of mean to put a trade dollar slot in there too lol, but maybe one day can fill that too.
As to how detailed you want to get into on substypes, that's a matter of personal preference I guess. Can range to just major types to whatever obverse/reverse types exist, maybe even metal types. (For example, you can call Lincoln sets a single type, or you can insist that VDB, wheat, steel, copper Lincoln Memorial and zinc Lincoln Memorial each consist of a separate type.) I'm statisfied with the way Dansco handles it for now and going by that as far as types go, using my own preferences to decide what to put in there (for example, I put a forward facing Jefferson nickel in there as a Jefferson type, since the old portrait of him is already covered by the war nickel.) Usually aim for a common but high condition coin as an example of the type. If high condition is too steep, will stick to Fine/EF at the very least so as to have a good representation of the type.

This thread is kind of whetting my apetite to start building a type collection.
Did a google search on "dansco 7070" and came up with the following link. Gosh - they're lovely! http://w2up.home.mindspring.com/dans...0/type_set.htm
By the way, I have no idea who this is. And I assume it's ok for me to post the link since it came up in a google search...

I even invited him to look in on us.

New guy here just chiming in. I was wondering where all my website traffic was coming from and it lead me to this thread. Looked like some fantastic conversations were going on so I decided to join.
Ugaman72, thanks for the website plug! It's only been up for 2 1/2 months and it still has a long way to go. I'm married with 3 kids, work full time, and attend college at night. Hopefully when I graduate school this spring I'll fix up the site.
gxseries, It's actually not that expensive to create a custom album. I'm currently creating a "how to" web page that uses a Dansco Coin Stock Album, 2x2 inserts from my laser printer, and kointain holders. (Instead of kointains you could use saflips and heat seal them).

| Thanks for the nice comments
Hi all,
Roy sent me an email alerting me that my Type Set was being discussed here, so I figured I'd pop in and say hi. I don't expect to be active here, but will follow this thread. As a matter of fact, not long ago, I decided to take a break from collecting, and am in the process of selling most of my collection (the Type Set is a keeper, though.) I think it's kinda neat that when you do a Google search on Dansco 7070, my site is the first link!
Regarding the set, it took me about 3 years to complete. Since initial completion, I've replaced about 10 coins so they fit in better with the rest of the set. I paid a premium for the Seated Dollar w/Motto, the last coin upgraded, as it really is a fabulous coin. About 2/3 of the non-moderns were slabbed and I cracked them out for the set.
I agree with Troodon about the Commems. I don't believe they belong in the set, so I just left those holes ampty (and not photographed.) IfI were desgning a Type Set album, there are things I'd do differently, but Dansco was the best option available.
Barry

Barry welcome.
Any new pictures of the up-grades, I keep your set in my favorites and I use yours all the time to help me with mine.
Bruce.

Barry | Welcome Barry! And all I can say is, WOW! Beautiful set! Is the 64 Kennedy an accented hair? Overall, they are all very beautiful. A very nice quality set!

Yes, you must tell me how to do that! That will be a great idea.

-But I'm with you, it has slots for things I don't care for (and will end up filling just for the sake of filling) and it doesn't have slots for ones I wish it did, but what can you do. One could create an "album" using 2x2s and coin pages or various other methods. The Dansco is a nice basic set for the most part. I didn't get the gold page (sometimes I wish I did), but I suppose it can be added eventually. I don't have all the gold to fill it anyhow (more empty slots? ahhhhh!). Good excuse to get that Liberty Head 1/4 Eagle, both 1/2 Eagles, and both Eagles eh? |

I wish I could make my own custom coin type set with a nice album but looks like that's going to be too costly.
