Thread: Does coin collecting make you anti-social?

So basically I've done nothing but go to school and look at coins for the last 8 months or so. I never thought about it making me anti-social until yesturday. I mean if you think about it CT and other forums are semi-social, as well as coin clubs and shows...

Yesturday was my first day of class in order to get my real estate license. I can't put a finger on it, but I was just different than everyone else. Maybe they were putting up fronts... but I'm sitting there listening to these people chatter on about the latest fads, the best schools, with big smiles on their face and perfect postures.. and honestly I felt like it was one giant BS parade. It didn't help that the teacher was completely full of himself and was hitting on one of my classmates.

Anyhow... I'm really starting to wonder... Did I have these people pegged right? I mean does the rest of society put up some sort of a show, or has coins made me completely anti-social?

i dont think it makes you anti social, those people just dont share a common interest with you so IMO maybe you just dont want to interact the way you feel you should. but what if you heard a couple classmates talking about their latest score from their bank teller, maybe you would want to interact with those people. my job for example, i work with the public all day, outside of work i dont really associate with many people like i used to. i do not associate with alot of my old friends due to "lack of interests". all of them are the party type and me, well not so much. and let alone if i tried to talk to any of them about my three hobbies they would just look at me like i had 40 heads. my interests are coins, paper money, and my favorite is aquariums. i find in my area there are not alot of people in my age range (im 27 years old) that share common hobbies so i seek refuge on sites like this, and cichlids.com where i find a large group of people like me. so i think you are ok and i wouldnt consider it anti social at all.

I don't think anti-social as much as you find their interests silly. I get this way at times. I know studying ancient history and economic systems does not make me better than anyone, but after being buried in such studies and then hearing people gossiping about the latest hollywood starlet to have a "wardrobe malfunction", whom is dating whom, and similar vacuous topics you really do feel out of place.

I was anti-social before I collected coins, so in my case, no, it hasn't made me (more) anti-social.

I don't think it makes you anti-social at all. In the last few years I have gone through phases when I was a pretty social person, and other phases where I was pretty "anti-social". And coins were there through both types of phases. Coins aren't the problem Besides, if they were, you could say the same about almost any other activity that you can do from the comfort of your home.

Well, if you make friends on forums and at coin shows/clubs, coin collecting makes you more social. My only close friend is my friend because we both collect coins.

Makes me bit paranoid when friends/relatively ask loudly in public places about whether i am buying any coins

I don't consider a chat or forum environment a social environment, It could lead to one through clubs, shows, face-to-face interactions though. I think I have only seen two members from this website in real life (as far as I know) and I only talked to one of them. I would interact with many of you outside of the website if given the chance but I don't think that is true for everyone here. It is like the car commercial where the kids are proud of how many friends they have on facebook while there parents are out being truly social.
I feel that I am a social person outside of these forums but the time I spend here could probably be used interacting more with those around me. However, you guys are more entertaining then many of them.

On the contrary, I think that it makes you more social than anti-social. Unlike my major in college and graduate school, computer science, coin collecting requires more interaction. If you are roll searching, you have to interact with a variety of banks on a regular basis. If you purchase coins at shows and shops, you interact with dealers and often discuss coins. If you encounter others with the same hobby you interact with them discussing coins you have.

I don't think so. You seem pretty sociable tuday.

Anti-social? Huh? Lots of my hobby involves me schmoozing tellers at banks to get the numismatic goodies that inevitably cross their paths. I think if anything it has made me much more social.

I'm with you, I have no interest in all the recent fads and that type of stuff. Are they putting up fronts? Depends on which part you are referring to, the part about big smiles and postures, I'm sure some are faking that. Most probably really do like talking about the fads though.
