Mintage info on gold coin, Gibraltar or Pobjoy mint?

Hey friends, I need information on this coin. I heard there was less than 1,000 minted, this is the half sovereign weighing only 1/10th? I know some of yous are from UK or may have the World Kraus, I think it's KM#517 but I'm not certain. Any and all info would be appreciated. Click here to enlarge

Gold Half Sovereign 3.1 so it's only a 1/10th ounce. The Britts have only changed the weight of the Half or Sovereign certain times for certain coins. 1997 Una and the Lion Gold Coin minted by the Pobjoy Mint on behalf of Gibraltar, ultra cameo!! Click here to enlarge

From latest guide (online access), It is KM #516 and there is no mintage figures listed on this coin the value is listed at 185. Fyi KM #517 is the Sovereign. It is very nice been looking to get one for myself.

Much appreciation Jack. I wrote to the Pobjoy Mint awhile back and I was really surprised that they couldn't help me with mintage information. The lady said it was sold with a Sovereign and a quarter Sovereign. Then I was cruising the internet and I saw the coin with a silver issue and a Platinum issue and of course a gold half sovereign like mine. Not only that, for the same year Apmex had a half ounce a few months back. I haven't been able to get much information on it at all except that it was minted at Pobjoy and it's definitely 24k cause I had my friend test it with his mass spectrometer and it weighs 3.1 grams which is .8 lighter than a normal half sovereign. Anyways, I blocked some of the email and changed my name, removed hers but this was one of the emails I received from Pobjoy. I'd like to find out as much about it as I can but this sucker is rare. Oh, and Heritage sold a set as well but their set was not a Sovereign, a half sovereign and a quarter sovereign like the lady said at all. I think the heritage set had 4 or 5 coins but I can't remember. Anybody??

    Dear Mr fretboard

    Thank you for your e-mail.

Unfortunately we do not have that much information available to us with reference to the Una and the Lion coin you are enquiring about.

We do not have information on how many were minted, but we do know that the 1 sovereign, 1/2 sovereign and 1/4 sovereign were sold together as a set for £239.95

We are sorry that we cannot be of more help

    Kind regards

    Mail Order

Oh here's that 2 pound coin on Apmex.

HA sold 2 Oz and platinum, gold silver set in 2011 September and yes it should be pure gold you can make that out by looking at its color (orange-yellowr) which would be different than sovereign which would have redish color to it (since it is alloyed with copper) or Britannia (yellow gold since it is alloyed with Silver).

I am hoping somebody from the UK or area near there can provide me more information. I thought it was a bit strange that Pobjoy Mint couldn't give me correct information but I appreciate what they gave me. I'll tell ya', people complain about our US Mint all the time but as far as keeping information on US coins they are top notch. Click here to enlarge
The Krause World Book doesn't really have much information at all. I am trying to find out the mintage and how many sets were minted and what kind of different sets were for sale. Also, I'd like to know the specs of the coin itself like how many mm's is the coin? Danka

Just had a look at the Schön; the half sovereign (1/10 oz) should be 17.95 mm. As for the mintage, that catalog lists few mintage figures anyway. Also, I am sure that, if you asked the Royal Mint in the UK about what they issued for the UK, you would get about as precise info as you get (for US coins) from the US Mint. But issuers such as Gibraltar, and mints such as Pobjoy, well ...

Maybe the government of Gibraltar can tell you more. A list of coin issues is here: http://www.gibraltarlaws.gov.gi/articles/1990s069c.pdf -- and somewhere in that list you see "Legal Notice 1996/107 (7.11.1996) Issue of Una and the Lion Coin". Side note regarding the designs: One important difference is that, on the Gibraltar piece, the lion holds or stands on the key. Click here to enlarge

Thanks Chris, I appreciate the info. Another thing that surprised me about the Pobjoy Mint is they have an encyclopedia on their website and I still couldn't find the coin. Oh well time to move on and spend time on something else. Click here to enlarge
