    getting a US coin collection.

    Hi All,

How much approximately will it cost to get a coin of each type of US coins, SLQ, Morgan dollar, peace dollar, Ike, 40% and 90% Kennedy etc, assuming that they will be in low grade but with full details and non key dates included.

    Thanks.

are you planning on going as far back as seated and bust coins? If so the bust dollar will cost you more than all the others combined (unless including gold). You should be able to get the ones you mentioned above for silver melt values.

I am thinking more of late 1800's to current date.
The thing is I am not in USA, and would like to get a cheap collection to know what you guys are talking about, I am looking for a simple list for the coins that I should be looking for.

    Thanks.

How much research are you willing to do? You could order a 2012 Red Book (formally, "A Guide Book of United States Coins") and use its type-coin values for whichever coins you're interested in including in your set.

You'd have to assemble some kind of list anyway for anyone here to give you an approximate estimate of the cost.

Sounds like you want to basically build a U.S. Type set. The Dansco 7070 album is exactly what this is. If you don't mind low grade or 'holed' or damaged coins for the normally expensive ones, you could really fill the album (except the gold page) for minimal cost. If I had to guess, again with low grade coins, maybe $400-$700. Less the gold page, I think there are about 70 holes in the album.

As a reference, here is my 7070 with most of the coins. If you click the coin, it will tell you what type it is.

I wanted to add... The 15 most expensive coins will cost the same as the other 60 coins. Give or take a few.

The 2013 is the newest and it would be better for the OP to search completed sales at different online auction venues than to rely on the Red Book price guide.

This is another question, I have a copy of "2011 North American Coins & Prices", it was on sale and bought the DVD version for 2$, if any one can give me an estimate price of each type that would be much faster than going through 200 pages or looking at ended e-bay listings.

Thanks again Click here to enlarge

But doing that kind of research into a collection you're thinking of putting together is part of collecting coins.

Lately, I've been toying with the idea of putting together an American Civil War type set, which will have 1 example of each denomination dated between 1861-1865. I'm using several online auction venues as my database for what these particular coins are selling for to get an idea of what expense I'm looking at in different grades.

That is a great idea -- nice historical context.
