Thread: Are these bills anything special?

My grandma found a few stacks of new bills that my grandpa had stashed away with his coin collection, and she wants to know if there's anything special about them or if they're just ordinary bills. I'm not really a bill collector, so maybe I missed something? but I don't see anything that would make them valuable other than the fact they're almost 40 years old.

In my opinion, the $1 would be a keeper, because the condition looks to be fantastic, and you just don't see 40 year old $1's all that often.....and if you do, they are usually pretty beat up.

The $2 would probably be a spender, just because 1976 $2's (even crisp, uncirculated examples) are still very, very common these days, even from banks.

However, since both notes were your grandpa's, keeping them for sentimental reasons would not be a bad idea. Other than the age of the notes, though, I don't see anything that jumps out at me, as far as collectability goes.

Thanks! however, I don't think she intended to let me have them, she just wanted to know if they had any collectible value.

When my grandmother died, we had to do the obligatory going through of things. We got to her purse and opened it up, and inside were 5 red seal $2 bills - my Grandpa, who had just lost his wife of over 50 years, turns to me and my brother and says:

"The old woman's been holding out on me..."

We laughed and laughed, and I have two of the $2's still. I didn't collect currency at the time, but just kept them as a reminder of that day.

The Series 1974 Federal Reserve Note is valued at $4 or $5 in uncirculated condition. Check the back plate number of the note, though. If the number is "905", then you would have an error note, and that would increase the value.



The Series 1976 $2 Federal Reserve Note is the first issue of $2 Federal Reserve Notes. In uncirculated condition, it's about the same value of the $1 note. Your note looks like it has a fold in the middle, so it's probably valued at about $2.

The number on the back of the $1 is "2034" and the $2 has no fold.
