    New Archaeopteryx german Coin

We are talking about the trouble with the new laser technology in die construction and the resulting ability to do very low relief. I said in that thread that the real problem lays with the lack of artistry, and not the technology.

So on cue, this showed up today and you have to be happy with this design

I think they could have done a little better on the art, but overall the design is very nice.

    Nice catch!

The designer of this coin, Barbara Ruppel, "arranged" the Archaeopteryx to make it look more recognizable. The stamp issued on the same occasion shows the fossil. http://www.bundesfinanzministerium.d...__Urvogel.html (page in German)

As for the federal eagle that is displayed on every German collector coin, well, I do not envy the designers. They are supposed to create two sides that "harmonize". So while some details of the eagle are always the same, its overall look varies from issue to issue.

Is that your new camera Ruben? The strike doesn't appear to be too strong, looking at the wings out toward the tips. Still a really nice coin. 62.5% silver?

Yes, Ag625. Used to be, until early 2011, that the €10 coins were 925 silver, and the unc version was available at face while the proof version was surcharged. Now the "at face" version of every newly issued €10 piece is Cu-Ni, and the proof version is 625 silver. Oh well, people who collect them because they find them interesting will probably not care that much, and those who collect coins solely because of the metal content will focus on bullion "coins" or bars ...

I'm sorry, but the German eagle always looks like someone is holding it around the neck and choking it.

Yes Not expensive. it is a Cybeshot as well with a Zeiss lense. don't believe that 14.1 megapixels junk. there is NO WAY.

WHAT? Your not getting it. It's a FOSSIL. a FOSSIL. See the wings in the original FOSSIL Click here to enlarge

The fossil happens to be a weak strike on the wings as well but it is a one of a kind find from an obscure mint.
