Great way to start. Most of us did it that way. Common Indians in that grade usually are worth a dollar or two. Did you pick that out of circulation?

Go to your local Books-a-Million or Barnes and Noble and grab a Whitman Indian Cent album and Red Book ("A Guide Book of United States Coins", it's red). Also, a few resources on web that should be useful:
http://www.coinfacts.com/Administrative/home.html
http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml

you don't need a lot of money to have a lot of fun with coins  I was playing with my circulated Mercury dimes today, as a matter of fact. hehe... picked up a used "old style" Whitman album for $10 (lays flat, but no hole for micro S) and was moving them around. Guess I need two circulated sets now, one for each kind of album

ReFirst timer

Hey hederick thanks alot for the info. As a matter of fact I moved into a house right around where I live know and we were renting it for a while. Well the land lord (that lived there prviously) had a pretty big garage in the back that he said we could have anything in it and we (my family) found a little leather pouch. We took it inside and dumped it out into a cookie pan and looked through them every one of them and that was the only good one other than a couple of newer kennedy half dollars and I kept it ever since.

If the halves are dated 1964 they are 90% sliver and if their dated between 1965-1970 they are 40% silver.

the hard cover red books are $12 retail, last time I bought one (still using my 1999 copy). they have a spiral bound version for a little less. krause also prints a similar reference for US coins, which B&N carries... has roll prices in it, which red book doesn't.

Don't forget, in a pinch a library may have an older copy you can peruse for free until you get one of your own.

Yes, I'm big on recommending public libraries as well. Mine has about two dozen on the shelf about coin collecting, and a bunch more available through inter library loan. So, don't forget to ask the librarian what inter library loan system you can use, and check out what's available there too.

Do you have a local coin club? Also, check out the ANA. http://www.money.org

Rodney Dangerfield, Numismatist

I am surprised that no one recommended buying supplies from a COIN DEALER. Sheesh...

As for Barnes and Noble, I tend not to shop there. They are a PUBLISHER with a retail store. As a writer, I see that as a conflict of interest, as when a grading service sells the objects they have graded.

I once interviewe one of the Lincoln Cent authors -- Kevin Flynn or John Wexler, I think -- and he said he got started when he was in the Army and all he could afford to collect was the change in his pocket and he noticed these small differences...

You never know where it can lead.
