I just read, buried in an article about austerity measures, that the Canada cent/penny is getting the ax. I haven't search for more details yet. I will be in Canada this weekend. Should I buy a bunch of pennies? Discuss.

Edit: Not sure if this is in a "proposed" or "passed" budget.

Makes this set a little more intriguing. All silver with a first of its kind, 99.99 silver cent. I picked a set up last month. Its a beautiful set.

The Lincoln cent will be next.

Good for Canada! It'll happen here too.

Yeah, right. Just like the George Washington $1 Federal Reserve note has been next, for what...four decades now? Sure.

I'm in Massachusetts and just searched a box of cents. Just about every roll had at least one Canadian cent, some had five or six. I don't think you have to go to Canadia to get those puppies! They are very common here, and only cost a cent.

From my experience, the farther north in the States one is to Canada, the more Canadian one cent coins one is likely to find in circulation.

For example, in New York state, I have found more of these coins in circulation upstate than in the NYC area. It also follows that the Canadian coin denominations are similar in size to US circulating coins and frequently get passed off as a US cent, nickel, dime or quarter.

No, the dollar note has only been on the chopping block for a few weeks, Up until then the official line has always been that the dollar coin and note would co-circulate and there has never been legislation proposed to eliminate the note til this year.

Not from what I have read. I have always read that the government tried to get rid of the $1 note when they issued the Dwight W. Eisenhower Silver Dollar Coin in 1971-1078, and then again, when they issued the Susan B. Anthony Silver Dollar Coin in 1979-1981 (And I believe that the reissue of the Thomas Jefferson $2 Federal Reserve Note, issued in 1976 was also going to play a part in this time) and then again with the Sacajawea Dollar Coin in 2000-2007, then finally, starting in 2007, with not one, but TWO different new dollar coin series: The Presidential Golden Dollar Coin series and the Native American Golden Dollar Coin series, both2007-and beyond.

(Note: I am not calling the Ike or SBA "Silver Dollars" in reference to their metal content, but to their color. I know there is no silver in the Ike or SBA, just like there is no gold in the Sac, Prez, or NA dollar coins)

About time, as a former resident of that nation, this is a no brainer.

Nope they never actually tried to discontinue the note. As far as I know no legislation to eliminate the note was ever submitted until this year.
