Dealing with spam

There are an untold number of spammers out there, joining forums like this for the sole purpose of posting links to their porn, drug purchase sites, etc., and CoinTalk attracts its share.

There is a right way, and a wrong way, for members to react when they come across such a posting.

The Moderators have the power to remove such postings, and the first one who sees it can be counted on to do so.

Each member can, and should, therefore, iimmediately notify the Moderators when they spot such a post. To do this, just click on the icon above each posting at the right. Using it to send an email to all Moderators ensures that one of us will see and react to the posting sooner than might occur by waiting for one of us to routinely look at the thread. Not every Moderator looks at every thread in every forum every day, but we all read our email.

Recently there have been several instances of replies being posted to spam. That can never be helpful. The spammer is already 10 victims away, and has no plans to return to the scene of his/her crime, so "go away" or insulting posts won't ever be seen.

Once a Moderator visits the thread, he will see the responsive posting, but by then he is at the thread and will take action without that urging.

Please, do click on the icon but don't post anything in the thread.

Thanks for helping keep CoinTalk spam-free.

Thanks for the reminder, Roy.

In terms of "informal benchmarking" CoinTalk seems to be relatively unscathed. I belong to other boards that get hit really hard. One was hit with garbage PMs to everyone in addition to unsavory postings.

Roy,
You requested that we do not reply to the threads. Suppose I flag the post for spam, and I simply state spam reported, should I not even post that? The only reason I'm asking is I assume everytime someone clicks the exclamation point, that the moderators receive a PM or something of the nature, and this might prevent a flood of messages?

Appreciate the concern Zane, but I'd rather receive an extra message or two instead of having to read all the posts to double check whether any of them need to be preserved as a live thread. Besides, the most reports I've ever seen for a single spam post was three.

And George - one reason "CoinTalk seems to be relatively unscathed" is that the Moderators move very quickly and eliminate a lot of spam that no one else ever sees - view total = 1 when it is killed.

Thanks, Roy, for staying on the watch, and keeping it "sight unseen". That is a major effort, to be sure.

George, when you see a spam posting,do like what Roy says by clicking on that white triangle. When the message screen come up,type 'SPAMMER!' in the field & post. All the moderators will be alerted via email straight away.

Yesterday,I reported 3 or 4 spam postings alone. It goes to show that we,as a community, have the responsibility for helping get CoinTalk cleaned up.I am usually pretty alert,as I check the list of the newest user names at the bottom of the main page.

I guess there are some pretty bored people out there who have nothing to do except post garbage on forums. Maybe if they actually got involved in some of the forums, like this one. :-)

The spammers are becoming more & more brazen. They obviously have far too much time on their hands. Why can't they engage in something legitimate instead of posting their crap?

I saw one of these bite the dust last week. Somebody caught it and gave it the quick heave-ho. I'd have reported it but I didn't know how. Next time I know what to do.

And, along with the upgrade, there's a lot of new weaponry for us to keep the spam out. Of course, until the spammers make new weapons..... on and on it goes. But for now we'll have the upper hand.
