Thread: Why does my 1932s PCGS coin have a boxy looking S? Is it a real coin or fake?

Bought this coin off ebay from a seller who has 100% feedback. Noticed in the pictures on ebay it had a boxy S on the back. When I got it and looked it under a jewerler's loop it was indeed an S but still looked boxy. There was also some red marks around the mintmark and on the back of parts of the coin. Everything checks out as far as cert verification goes for the PCGS coin.

What do you guys think? Any tips for someone new to buying coins off ebay? I always buy coins at coin shows and have been for the past 4 years. Since work is getting really intense I can't go on weekends because that's when i am working.

I'm just going to go ahead and ask, because if I don't, the first person to reply will. Can you provide us with larger pictures of the mint-mark and the full coin on both sides? That will help get more useful help.

Brg is right, if you wish to ask our opinions we will need to see a close up of the mintmark area. However, the graders are extremely proficient with this issue since it has been counterfeited so heavily. Coins like this are ones I would support having slabbed mainly for the counterfeit protection it offers. If the cert number checks out for date and grade, I think you are fine.

Have you stacked the slab against another one ?

I always do that with every slabbed coin I get. The Chinese ones were not supposed to stack correctly. From what I've read anyway, because I haven't found one yet.

The coins stack correctly. I will try and get better pictures when I get home. If the coins stack correctly what does that mean?

I have not done much with early Washingtons lately. So my 32's are stored away presently. But I do remember mintmarks on the 32 to 36 quarters did look boxed, squished, flattened at times on the average circulated ones.

Ok thats a relief. The coin mintmark looks like the S on the right and not the left of the link provided by above by the user bigjpst.

It looks fine to me, could be a soft strike or because of the grade just normal wear. At any rate having it graded by PCGS assures it's genuine or they'll buy it back.

Ok. Thanks guys! Its more reassuring to know that the PCGS coin i bought is a real authentic coin as the information matches up. Will coins by PCGS every decrease in value or will they gain value like regular coinage?

All coins, slabbed or not decrease in value all the time. They go up and down like a yo-yo.

I agree, any certification is just providing some protection as to what the coin is, its no guarantee of value.

Alright. I am just very glad that i have reassurance that i bought a good coin and that is real.

If the slabs stack and nest together solidly it either means the slab is genuine, or that the Chinese have improved their fakes. The first blue label Chinese fake slabs would not nest togther well with genuine slabs or other fake slabs. I haven't gotten my hands on their improved version yet so I don't know if they stack better or not.

BTW you got a great deal on the slabbed coin. Good for you.
