Hello, I joined the forum a few weeks back but never bothered to introduce myself. I collected Canadian and American coins seriously when I was a kid and kind of lost interest when I got into high school/university. Now I'm 43 and interested again. My 8 year-old son got me back into the hobby - so I must thank him. I currently live in Taiwan so I've decided to jump into Chinese coins [ancient and modern] as these, along with Taiwanese coins, are 95% of what's available here.

Are there any other Chinese collectors on the forum? I'd love to hear from you .

Hi, and to CoinTalk Colin.

My specialty is post-1866 Japanese coinage, which includes the coinage of the various Chinesee puppet regimes estalished by Japan in Northern China in the 1930s and '40s.

I also have a very small collection of early Republic of China coins, and dabble slightly in the cash coins of China/Korea/Japan/Annam.

Welcome, I'm focusing on Taiwan coins issued from 1949 to present. Not working on any mint sets though I'd love to get a complete account of what sets were minted for which years. Any suggestions on getting accurate mintage amounts or which years mint sets were issued? Seems you're also collecting currently circulating coins, too. Any you're still looking for? Any luck finding the two 54 NT$5 and NT$10 coins? I'm also in Taipei with family.

weifin,

Good to hear from someone else who is here in Taiwan. Where do you live? I live in Tien Mu, working at Soochow University.
I specialize in chopmarked coins. I don't collect modern Taiwanese coins. Chopping stopped at around 1935 so most of my collection is from the 19th and early 20th centuries. I'm not sure about mintage figures you ask for but local dealers may be able to help out.
Are you Taiwanese or a foreigner? What do you do here? I surprised there's another Taipei member out there.

ColinG, Good to hear from you! I am a somewhat retired Westerner here in Taipei city near Da-An Park. Taught in Taiwan from '84 to '93 and have recently (March of this year) returned to help care for elderly mother-in-law. My wife is Chinese. Seems our interests in Chinese coins cover different time periods. I have been hesitant to start on any pre-1949 coins because of the fakes in the market. Have stuck to circulating post-1949 coins and am nearing my completion of 4 sets. Am short one 38 NT$.50 (silver) and the coins for 54: NT$10 and one NT$5. Can give you a good website for clear pictures if your interested. These are ROC years of course. Am not familiar with chop marks but have seen some here, i.e., cointalk. Am getting into the variations of Chinese on each series of coins. Very interesting to see the variations of openings and where lines touch or not. Very consistant within series but can vary greatly between series. We'll have to keep in touch! William. Oh, in my American coin collection I have quite a few Canadian pennies. Got them from an old lady who sold me a box of wheat pennies for $.02 each. Do you still have your Canadian set? I restarted my original penny set--am short only two now.

ColinG, another thing, have gotten most of my Taiwan recently out of circulation coins from post office and Bank of Taiwan. Have made several "friends" who watch for me. But just as they will buy back old coins for face value, they will also resell them to you for face value if they have them. I can give you a heads up on what is scarce, e.g., year 89 NT$1 is perhaps lowest minted with less than 2million minted. Went through about 7000 to find one. Any questions welcomed. William
