Whoa! 50 dollar coin find in an American Half Dollar Bag!??

I just found a Mexican 500 peso Coin in a bag of half dollars...The date is 1987 and it says $500, which I guess means Pesos. On the reverse, the coin says Estados Unidos Mexicanos. An online currency calculator says this is worth almost 47 bucks! Is this correct?? Thanks alot!!

The Krause catalog lists it at $2.00 in AU and $2.50 in uncirculated KM#529.It is made of Copper-Nickel and features a portrait of Francisco Madero, president from 1911-1913.
It was minted during a time of extreme economic hardship and the new Mexican peso (N$) is equal to about 1,000 of the ones from 1987 (MXP),so it was worth about 1/2 peso in today's money.

oh. lol...I think maybe there in a "new" peso that Mexico uses. Perhaps those are the ones that are worth about 1/10th of an American Dollar. Oh well, it's still fun to find...thanks for the info =)

Mexico did a currency revaluation in 1992 making 1000 old pesos equal to 1 new peso. For the next three years the coins carried a NP for the denomination and then they dropped the N. So your 500 old peso coin equals 1/2 of a new peso, and I believe the current exchange rate is somewhere around 12 (new) pesos to the dollar. So your coin is worth about 1/24th of a dollar or about 4 cents.

On the bright side it is worth considerably more than that in the value of the metal. Click here to enlarge

That's a pretty cool find, even if it's not worth much.

Oddly enough, I've actually got the same coin, from the same year!
