LinkBack Thread Tools Rate Thread Display Modes 06-14-2004, 09:52 PM   #1 (permalink) sethb Junior Member   Join Date: Jun 2004 Posts: 3 1943 no mint mark nickel I was recently looking through some coins I had gotten in change and set aside several years ago, and noticed that one is a 1943 Jefferson nickel with no mint mark. It doesn't have the r with the hole in the left "leg" like the Henning nickels are supposed to have. It doesn't appear to have had it's mint mark removed. Any ideas what the origin of this coin might be? Any ideas on it's value? It is a good picture, but the color isn't as clear to me. Is it silver, or CN? COuld well be a Henning, since he used various reverse dies - they do not all have the defective "R". I don't have a scale with which to weigh it, and I don't think the silver nickels have that same unique sound when dropped that other silver coins have.   06-17-2004, 07:31 AM   #5 (permalink) JBK Coin Collector   Join Date: Jun 2004 Posts: 1,080 For me, the difference is easy to spot, but I have been around war nickels for years. The silver and the CN really look different, especially in worn examples. A scale would also be useful, but someone with experience would be able to tell without one. If you line up some war nickels next to some CN ones the difference should be apparent. If yours is silver with no MM, then that is a different story - never heard of one, but could happen, I suppose. Would be rare (if real). I also have a 1943 no Mint mark nickel which does not appear to be a Henning nickel. It weighs 4.76 grams and I really couldn't tell you it's origin.
